Offical Frank Zappa Thread

I’ve been a Zappa fan for a very long time. I got to see him on the Overnight Sensation tour in the Celebrity Theater here in Phoenix. That was a long time ago but I remember it well.
After seeing this thread devoted to the man I felt I needed to pull out everything I currently have which is by no means a complete collection. Now, I have to figure out where to start re-listening to everything again. Chronological order maybe?
Either way, it’ll be time well spent.

Bongo Fury and Roxy & Elsewhere are burned into my brain. I saw Zappa in Chicago, October 1984, could not have chosen a better set list... Oh, Hot Rats ranks up there too!

The early- to mid-70s recordings are my favorite era of Zappa music. I first heard Apostrophe as a new-release while in high school and was hooked. Over the years, I've acquired almost everything released while he was alive. The early Mothers stuff has grown on me, and there are nuggets in the later, more experimental, stuff but the 1970's remain my favorites. I saw him twice on tour; in 1977 with the small band and in 1984 with the big band. RIP Frank

I didn't discover Bongo Fury until 1979. My older buddy had a 1973 Econoline van, with an 8-track of course! Bongo Fury was in constant rotation with other long forgotten tapes.
We never had any credit from the liquor store! I will need to check out the 50th anniversary release. :)

Great collection

I have never listened to "Just another band..."

Chunga's revenge I like, particularly "Would you go all the way", "Tell me you love me" (remade in 1988 for Broadway The Hard Way)

Grand Wazoo i find it irregular. I love "Blessed Relief", it's an actual jazz standard today, believe it or not. It is the closest thing Frank got to write straight ahead jazz, and one of the few instances Frank is not being cynic or angry at something. And "Eat that question" although is it in all fairness a George Duke track. But the title track is not a good track, i find it boring. And i'm a big jazz fan.

Same for Waka Jawaka, i didn't like "Big swifty" too much. Title track is really trite. "Your mouth" is fun despite the agressive lyrics. I like it. As well as "It might just be a one-shot deal".

Roxy&Elsewhere absolutely rules. As does "Overnite sensation".

Hot Rats might be FZ's best record, although several albums can be FZ's best record. I must have listened to Hot Rats at least 100 times. Both the original mix and the 1987 remix, which I happen to like.

Fillmore East June 1971 is a record I like a lot, because of the comedy. Flo and Eddie are so good!!
