Grateful Dead, Hilton Hotel Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, March 15, 1969: Bob Weir's mother was the chair of the entertainment committee that organized this event, known as the Black & White Ball, a benefit for the San Francisco Symphony, notably on Phil Lesh's 29th birthday. In keeping with the theme, the band reportedly wore black and white costumes: Pigpen and Jerry were pirates, Mickey was Zorro, TC was an eighteenth-century bell ringer, and Kreutzmann was a French sailor. The band started late (reportedly due to a delay in setting up the equipment that was attributed to Bear) and then left after playing for only about an hour. The social columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle referred to them as the "Ungrateful Dead."
It may not have been the Dead's finest hour, but they were clearly having a lot of fun. It took the organizers nearly 20 years to recover — the next Black & White Ball wasn’t until 1987.
Some setlists indicate that the band opened the show with "Morning Dew" and then "Alligator," and these songs do appear on these recordings, but we do not believe they are from the Black & White Ball. Indeed, the show definitely did not open with a "Dewgator." Rather, after some technical difficulty, including a call for "Mr. Bear" to help get the monitors working, and Jerry's warning "Here it is, the Ides of March again," the band launches into their first ever "Hard To Handle."
Reel 1019 is clearly labeled in Bear's handwriting -- "Dead, 15 Mar 69, Black & White Ball #1" and includes the following setlist in Dick Latvala's along with notes in another unidentified person's handwriting:
1. Hard To Handle
2. Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl
3. Dark Star>
4. St. Stephen>
5. The Eleven (cut)
Reel 1020 is also clearly labeled "new Dead, 15 Mar 69, Black & White #2" in Bear's handwriting, with the following setlist in Dick's handwriting:
1. The Eleven
2. Turn On Your Lovelight
3. Morning Dew
4. Alligator
After "Lovelight," for about two minutes or so, it seems like the band might stay onstage, but Bobby eventually says, "Thank you folks, that's just about it."
Then the tape continues with the end of a jam and then "Morning Dew" and "Alligator." The sound of the venue on that portion of tape is completely different than the sound of the Black & White Ball. Jerry announces "All requests night!" before the band dives into "Morning Dew."
Our conclusion is that Bear recorded the Black & White Ball over another show, and all that remains from that earlier performance are the two songs at the end of the reel. Of course, finding a rare "Morning Dew/Alligator" is a cause to rejoice, even if the date of the performance remains a mystery. Deadbase notes only two known instances of that song sequence — one in 1967 and one in 1969.

In the Fall, we began preserving the final tranche of Grateful Dead reels in Bear's vault, mostly from 1969 and 1972. We only have about 60 more to go until all of his original master recordings of the Dead are preserved. We will continue to post about it in the coming weeks.

"Grateful Dead, April 13, 1969, Glenn Miller Ballroom, University of Colorado, Boulder: There's an entertaining Reddit post about this show by one of the enterprising organizers that booked the band and was there to provide a first-hand account.
The energy in the room absolutely shines through the recording. From the opening notes, it is clear the band really came to play that night.
Here's what's on the reels:
1. Turn On Your Lovelight (cut at 25:06)
2. Doin' That Rag (head missing)
3. Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl
4. Morning Dew
5. Dark Star>
6. St. Stephen>

The tape runs out before the end of "Alligator," but according to the Reddit post, the janitor cut the power shortly after that anyway so he could clean the room for morning classes.

for a paltry $9.99 a month. I will always love the music and environment that is (was) GD but am not going there.
 
^ Kinda agree, I have enough high quality Dead shows from impeccable sources not to mention a ton of DP's all ripped to a dedicated Mac Mini.

This might sound bad but I just don't listen to them as much as I used to.

When I do I know I have an incredible selection to choose from, the only wrinkle being that I need to be at home with the Mac Mini.

So I can see how it might be beneficial for folks who don't have access and or just want to be able to access the shows where ever they happen to be.
