For artists that cranked out creative music of the 60s and 70s and still preform for their fans are expected to give them what they want to hear.
Its hard to criticize them for their set list.
Just one example is the mercurial Bob Dylan who has continued to compose his literary lyrics and magical phrasing. And plays a mix of his new & some classic songs and fans often take to media and complain.

I saw Jorma with his good friend & accomplished song writer John Hurlbert last year. Amazing finger work and acoustic interplay. Of course while filing out of venue many mumbled that they wished he played hits.

John Mayall (RIP) would also play a mix of old and new, but of course he could not even fill a club setting.

The Steve Miller statement sums up the dilemma of most big influental artists.

Also local theaters and clubs host popular and struggling non-arena artists. Soo much great new music out there of all genras.

Two years ago Neil Young toured and let fans know that if you want to hear hits this tour is not for you. He said he was going to play his favorite songs that are often swirling in his head, and they are not always the hits.

The Eagles are an exception. All their songs are extremely well written. Dylan has often praised some of the song writers as writing perfect songs.

Im curious, who are your 10 favorite artists. You seem to appreciate 60s & 70s music.
