Oh no, Sony TA-1120

I see with your thorough cleaning, the biasing diodes on the daughter board are scrubbed clean. They need a generous dose of thermal grease and installed with care.

As the picture shows, the old grease was so dirty I'm sure it was conducting. I'm not 100% sure my termal paste is none conductive, so I will hold on until I am sure I have a none conductive paste/grease. If you have a recommendation, please let me know.
I dont run it very hard, I think the temp on the outputs were around 35 degrees celcius yesterday, after four hours of playing.
I know its only foolish of me, but I set the bias to 20mv.
I like to think of my home as the last retirement home for the old amps :)
 
This amp is highest rated and described on the " select 45 rpm ".
So i bought one. But mine is not working.
Anyways....
Does it really sound as good as some of the most musical amps you ve heard in life?

And please describe the sound quality?

Sorry to hear your sony isn't working, its a lot of work!
I think it sounds like the first sony ES product :) Hard to describe sound, but compared to many of my other amps/receivers, I think the Sony adds a additional layer to the music. It's also very detailed.
But I cannot guarantee I've heard the difference in this one or a dirt cheap NAD 3020 on a blind test.
I like the sound of most of my gear and the small differences is just that, small.
I think a good, easy to drive speaker is the way to go. Sorry for that :)
 
Frank solem. Thanks for the reply. You know iv got a fully refurbed n recapped NAD 3020. The owner gave me for listening for a year. And the tech who did the 3020 recapping , told me that it has stayed in his top 5 amps .
Well if it was for looks alone the 3020 is an ugly duckling.
And the TA-1120 is a beauty . All metal . All switches work flawlessly.
Yes the 1120 does require a lot of work .
Ill give it to the same tech for another push at the refurb job.
Last time we had received and used some fake output 15003 transistors. They didnt last.
And its been dead . Just didnt find time for sending it.
We did go about half a dozen other amps...several sansuis that came out wonderful.

I got some guaranteed none electrical conductive paste from mouser and applied today.

All that is left for me to do now, is fabricate a gray dustcover for the main cap, with the sony writhing on :)

I had a issue with the sound after recap. It was a weaker signal in the right speaker on this one too! Turned out to be X302 on the breaker board that was almost bad. It got better when i carefully knocked on it, so I replaced it.
A also replaced one cable from the phono input to the eq-board. It broke in the solder joint when i was working the board.
And I had put in C102 the wrong way. Can actually be seen on one of the pics from before.

I have upped the main cap to 10 000uF, 100V, coupling caps on outputs got 3300uF, 80V. Everything else as original.

I will spend a couple of months listen to it, but I'm glad this one turned out so nice.

When i played this one on DBT, the shine in the lamp was almost nothing at all, so my first project must have a ground fault to be solved.

But now its x-mas gifts to be bought and wrapped. Well, cant wait to get back to the workbench again :)

Hello again.
I have received a message from a fellow member, mentioning the same ''problem'' with increased volume when operating the balance pot on his unit.
I have 2 ea original 1120 and 1ea 1120A now. Both of my original 1120 have a increase of about 10% volume when I set the balance to far left or right. Higher volume the further I adjust the balance.
My 1120A has the same volume all the way, as it should.
Is it just the way the first 1120 are constructed, or is there something slightly wrong. I think it sound very good, but what do I know..
I have tested some more quasi complementary units now, they all have consistent volume.

I been ready all this because I have a 1120A and now a 1120 with some issues found the first one working on the second which i finally figured out with some guidance from a member. T obe honest I suspected the transistors but is a pain one on the circuit board the (301) shorted. Anyway my plan is to a full restoration like yours after the thing is running 100% I just love the look and of the ES line from 1960s.
