OHM A speakers

I just purchased a set of Ohm Walsh A speakers from Ebay. They look like giant Ohm F's. Does anyone know anything else about them? I have a set of Ohm Walsh 2's and 4's. I did not even know they existed.

Wow, impressive. The first picture is the A's compared to the F's.

The person I bought them from has a bill of sale from 1972 for 2 sets of OHM A's and 2 sets of OHM F's for $12,000. What could $12,000 buy in 1972?

A 16 inch driver instead of a 12 though it's about as tall and has nearly the same voice coils. It's not quite as horrific a load on your amp as the F was/is an is 8 ohms nominal.
If they work or are serviceable, you struck the mother-load.

Actually an 18" driver.

Check out the stats at the Ohm site. 78dB efficiency, yikes! Needs 350 to be driven well, but not built to take it. Crazy.

I want a pair.

Nice find by the way KR7600.

I heard a pair of Ohm A's in a high end stereo shop in Toronto, about 1970. To this day they rank in the top 2 or 3 speakers I've ever heard.
The sound quality was seamless and spacious. It seemed as if the music was coming out of thin air instead of from a pair of speakers. The listening room was horrible by today's standards for serious audio showrooms, but these speakers just killed everything else in the room, JBL, AR, Bose, Altec and a bunch of other pretenders to the top of the acoustic heap.

In 1972, 12K would buy a Corvette and probably have change left over for a Nova.

I have wanted Ohm A's forever. You are a lucky man.. I have never been able to find some at a justifiable price..

IIRC, ( I was a little too young to drive in 1972)a new 1972 Vette loaded was closer to 8-9K, as my uncle had bought a new '71 Vette roadster, leftover in 1972. I'll have to ask him if he remembers what he paid, for it back then. So you could probably have bought a Vette and 2 Nova's for 12k in '72.
Just my .02 cents
EDIT: a base 1972 Corvette coupe was $5,550 in 1972!!!!

Upon further research, there is a guy in Ohio who will build or rebuild you a set of Ohm F's for 7,000 or a pair of Ohm A's for 15,000. He uses all the original materials including rewinding the voice coils to new titanium and aluminum cones. I will have the drivers redone, it is going to cost $1500. He states the Ohm A's are better than the Ohm F's.

This is like the holy grail for Ohm lovers (I'm one). I'm jealous and drooling! I thought that there were no A's to be had!

Not sure what you paid, but whatever it was, you got a bargain.

Well done!

bs

The major problem with the A's (and probably the F's) was that they would jump their surrounds at the base of the cone assembly. A technician would have to come out and undo the clamping ring, reseat the end of the cone and torque the clamp tight again. If you don't crank them, you should hopefully avoid this problem.
Enjoy!
