If you look at the foam surround it has a Unique Slope the way the roll is just like original 1978 to 1980 8 inch woofers from OHM.... Nobody else has these unique foams

I believe running 125 watts vintage power or more is what makes them sound like much bigger speakers also yes using a new powerful amplifier I would say 150 watts of new power or more I just wouldn't bring out the system for a party and run it for several hours at high volume off of a very high power amplifier never would I trust that they could take that many hours of a lot of power safely being 40 years old..
They are for your pleasure listening and with the big Kenwood basic m2a I will listen to maybe three or four songs at power levels peaking on the meters at just under 400 watts at 4 ohm

Thanks for the advice.
I'm not sure if the volumes I would be listening at are considered "high", but I probably wouldn't be blaring it. At least not for long periods of time. 90% of the time, when listening, I'm about 8 feet away on a couch and I think I have it at a moderate level. My wife has never complained at the levels (yet).

I am right there with you ..
If you look at my video and pay attention to the volume knob in the beginning you will see it at about 10 o'clock position, which is really too loud for our health ...not concert loud but close enough
The microphone is easily over driven on my cheap phone
I have that album. Very nice.

Just making a post after thinking about my listening experiences so far with the upgraded L’s.. I’m using a Denon AVR 391 that is rated at 75 wpc @ 8ohm. While the sound quality is good (great, honestly), the bass I still lacking without a sub.
Is it my room? Is it placement? Is it the Denon AVR?
When I read reviews of these speakers from years and years ago, people comment on how good the bass is for 8” drivers. When I listen to my own, I’m like “uhh.. what?” and I end up using my subwoofer. (Which is okay, it just takes up space and I like the idea of a 2 channel setup where the speakers create enough bass on their own)
Let me know your thoughts on this. If you need further info, let me know!

If this is a dedicated listening room, and not shared with other uses or non audiophiles. This is far in the weeds!
Play with placement in relation to floor, walls and corners. There likely will be compromises to add bass but not bloat if to close to boundaries.
Symmetrical setup to side walls. Vary the toe in also. Mark floor with tape so you can easily go back, if a good spot found. Move your listening chair forward and back listening for more bass. Bass waves are large and can go up and down as listening position changes.
Try one change at a time to isolate what it does.
Height, rigidity and tilt of speaker stands or end tables they are on, make big differences in tone. Short tilted or flat stands can add bass, if they don't add bloat. Try some makeshift stands of varied height to temporarily test. Before buying stands.
Plant stands or large cement blocks at $2 each.

Are your new updated Woofer's Poly or Original Paper style?
Are the Woofer's Both with original HUGE magnet assemblies ?
And I like my model L's Best on my 14 inch stands in the CORNER of my room for best Bass output

I attached a pic of what I’m working with. It’s not a dedicated room, but our main floor living/dining/kitchen area. The wall the speakers are on extends to the right probably another 12 feet. A small dining table is there.
At the listening position, where I took the pic, is a couch. So I can’t move that. It’s about 8 feet away and the wall behind the couch is about 6 more feet back.
To the right of the couch is the open kitchen area with an island.
I do have custom tilted stand being made and should have them soon. Hoping they help.
When I do listen, I toe in the speakers to point at me (where I sat when I took the pic).
I guess what I’m saying is, due to space constraints and the wife factor, my speaker placement is limited.

As far as I can tell, the woofers look paper and the magnets are definitely big.

@Harvestor - Spoke with a guy who just bought Ohm refurbished L’s and his look like they do on the website, unlike mine. Here’s a pic. Def poly cone. Not sure why his are different.

You could Disconnect the New assembly and Connect Directly to the Woofer's the old original way... And see if that makes a difference

Some of those poly cones have smaller different magnet assembly check and see if it looks like the picture right above your post

Back in the 90s they were using different magnet assemblies not original with the poly cones

Yes, years and years ago these had great bass for 8" drivers. But, that was in comparison to what was available then, in the '70's (I believe they were compared to Large Advents). We've been spoiled with new technologies and materials since then.
I think now you have to compare them to what is available at their price, if you can find a good pair.
I think they're still awesome speakers. Especially for their size.

so it’s possible the set with the poly cone were upgraded decades ago and that’s the main difference in appearance.
