Ohm Model L Questions

Just brought home a pair of L’s… functioning correctly, impressive Bass & enjoying thus far.
I am wondering however, my pair has the “single switch on the back” and even at -10 DB they’re still just a tad bright with my trusted sources ime.
Anyone else has find this to be? or glad to hear any further thoughts.

Considered recapping the crossovers (if that might be of help) but could just leave well enough alone if no appreciable potential sonic improvements are generally gained. There’s certainly an argument for leaving them as they are I believe.

Next to clean the cabinets up a bit!
Definitely impressive for their size and cost.

If you have time and inclination. Try recap. My C2s have three position switch. And does reduce brightness in C2 case. They have been recapped. Don't ask me how recap changed sound. To many years since. They are warm speakers.

Interesting, Thanks for mentioning.
I’ll have to investigate a little what caps might be preferable. I imagine there’s only a handful, or less in there.
 
I’ve owned various Ohm speakers since 1980. Never capped any, just refoamed them. The original caps are high quality.
If you have low tweeter response, or none at all, yes, a recap is in order. (if the tweeters aren’t blown)

Folks have posted on here about their speakers sounding bad after a recap.
They ended up putting the original ones back in.

Unless you have a definite problem, I recommend don’t fix what’s not broken.

But, your speakers, do what you want!

Try pointing them inwards, so you can just see the outer edge of each speaker. Use low stands, preferably not tilted up. Sometimes having them on the floor helps. Hopefully, your room is fully carpeted.
 
All helpful thoughts. They're on stands slightly tilted up (will tweak that) with slight toe in. I was curious if a recap might smooth out the slightly forward highs but that said, might just hold off and go with them all vintage-y as are for now.
 
Toe in with just being able to see the outside of each cabinet should knock off the excess treble in your room.

This advise comes from John Strohbeen himself when I was setting up my rare Ohm Model K2 speakers.
It worked exactly like he said it would.
 
Does anybody know who sells the black speaker grill cloth that resembles what came on the Ohm model L's? Ohm only sells you the new frames with speaker grill cloth only on their site.

Have you tried local yard goods stores?
 
GIK Accoustics who make Accoustic panels etc list Guilford of Maine. One of Thier fabric sources. They have a website.
I've seen other mail order sources referred to on the speaker thread. But don't recall names. You could start a fresh thread in speakers, with audio fabric in title.
 
Thanks Guys, yes I did try, but I found some Jet-black fabric from simply speakers through Amazon. Pretty much a identical match for Model L, the C-2 Ohms and probably all in Ohm's line, plus Ess Heil, and Polk speakers, by my direct comparison, and many more speaker brands.
 
HELP

Figured I would use this thread instead of starting a new one.

Shortest way to tell a long story:

Bought a pair of L series used.
Spoke with Ohm and decided to have the woofers rebuilt/refurbished and the SBA added. Shipped and was told 3 weeks. $490 all in but I was excited.
12 weeks later they finally ship them to be delivered next day
UPS had a tracking number but never got the package. This was an entire week.
When I emailed Ohm, they apologized, said they are probably lost and that they would ship me L woofers they had in stock.
Woofers come obviously not brand new.
SBA is no where to be found. Just a woofer. And the wires are wrong.
Ohm tech asks me to take a photo of the SBA so he knows what wires he needs. I ask what it looks like. he says a black box on the back. I tell him that doesn't exist. He goes silent. Tells me he will ship me the SBAs

I asked Evan at Ohm what was happening? He sent me woofers with no SBA.
Brennan in Brooklyn suddenly texts me that he didn't know Evan sent me the NEW L woofers which do not need an SBA.

I am leaving out all the BS that went on during this process.

So now I am 14 weeks into a 3 week refurb/SBA upgrade and I am holding a set of woofers that I can not visually see an SBA built on that cost me $500.

I think this is complete BS. What started out as something I was SUPER excited for has left me feeling like I am getting completely duped.

It seems like Evan sent me woofers thinking I would have no clue what I was missing and that I would never figure it out. And when his own employee clued me in, they came up with a story about new woofers not needing it to put this past them. ( I said it seems. It could be me being paranoid)

I have ZERO trust that I am getting what I paid for.

I am going to look at these things and always feel like I got completely shorted.

I do not even trust them to make this right somehow.

I feel like I paid $500 for new foam surrounds.


Has anyone purchased new L woofers recently? Is Ohm telling the truth about them not needing an SBA?

Could I really have a woofer that was redesigned to not need one?

If I buy a pair of woofers from Ohm and also add the SBA to my online order, would they call me and tell me I didn't need the SBA?

Anyone knowledgeable enough on this stuff to help me here? I need to feel better about this.

Truly not sure what to do.

I almost want to demand my money back and tell them they need to let me keep these woofers as a replacement for what they lost on me.

All I wanted was a rebuilt woofer with the SBA that I can enjoy for a long time. At this point I wish I could just get my original woofers back.

This hobby has brought me a lot of joy this year but this has really killed it.

Sounds like you should have SBA units, one on each woofer magnet attached with 2 sided tape.

See post 17 also.
 
I agree. But they are telling me their new replacement woofers have been redesigned and don’t need the SBA. And that where I’m calling bs.

This what was sent me. If you look at post 17, his woofers have a larger magnet and the SBA attached. That was 5 years ago. All of a sudden they have new woofers?

WOW, that's a good looking woofer!
Cast frame is a lot better than stamped steel.
What's the cone made out of?
Any tuning port restrictors?

Jury is out on the lack of SBA.
I'd like to know why not!

I agree with that. It is a great looking woofer! They did not send me port plugs like they say on the site. I am not sure how to tell what the cone is made of. It doesn't seem like paper but only because it has a cool "finish" to it.

I just wish I could find someone who ordered new woofers in the last year or so and can tell me if they were told they didn't need the SBA. Literally every post I can find on the SBA shows a box.

I try and think logically through things....

On their website:
The SBA is $140 each ($280)
Woofers are $225 each ($450)

They charged me $490 to rebuild my woofers and add the SBA to each.

Why would they do this if the replacement woofer they sell has the SBA "built-in"? I could have just purchased new woofers that had the SBA "built-in" for $450 and had new woofers within days, instead of waiting 14 weeks.

Makes ZERO sense. Feel like I am getting totally scammed.
