old capacitors (in their day) vs new

thinking out loud and rather convoluted i wonder if when things were built to last the designers had the ulterior motive to let the machines they designed be allowed to mellow through age be it through capacitors in the main with other oddments thrown in . ?

OH! ...I almost forgot.

Back to the original OP question. What size and value uF/V of main caps did you need? I was going to make a suggestion for a cap if the size is right.
