Old, cool, and interesting Stuff

Retired El Toro NAS - Tustin Helicopter Base
One of two WWII Anti-Submarine Airship hangers saved for posterity. They, along with the pair at Estero Bay, were the largest wood-framed structures in the hemisphere.

We once bid the engineering to refurbish the doors. I would have gotten to design the controls and PLC programming. Talk about the one that got away!
Besides helicopters and the occasional blimp they also held the rubber band powered model airplane championships in them.

Didn't the Mythbusters guys use that facility at some point? Something like the "lead balloon" episode or such?

Regards,
Gordon.

"Traces of Texas reader Jaclyn Joseph graciously shared this terrific photo of her grandmother, Mary Louise Stebbins, who was the Cabbage Queen in Weslaco in the 30s. Mary's dress is made entirely of cabbage. She was 16 when this was taken and later said that, by the end of the day and parade, she was rather "aromatic." I can believe that.
Thank you, Jaclyn. Really great." found on Facebook

Cardington airship hangers are still going strong, just outside Bedford. Home of the ill fated R101.

How could I ever forget. The first and only time I was in the presence of a video disc player watching Airplane, Katie, the girl who would eventually become my wife, kissed me. :)
At one time Zenith sold a clone of the RCA CED player. We had one or two and a library of discs that employees could check out for "product evaluation.".
We had a very Barney Fife-like security guard whose job it was to check out the equipment passes. He just had to make a remark when a stack of discs I took home included "Barbarella." It was too bad he didn't have any pearls to clutch.

"A Somaliland military armed vehicle takes part in a parade during the self-declared Independence Day."

edit; the base vehicle is a Tygor E2 made by Harrow Armored Vehicles, based on a Toyota Land Cruiser chassis.

are those whitewalls painted on the tire?

"Imagine you are on a cruise and all of a sudden the water recedes and the boat is in a corn field.
That is what happened in 1910 in WV.
A massive, midnight flash flood made the whole valley look like an ocean!
The captain got disoriented in the pitch black, mistook a random farmhouse light for a navigation beacon, and accidentally steered the 235-foot packet boat completely off the river.
By morning, the floodwaters totally ghosted them—rapidly receding back into the main river channel overnight and leaving this massive sternwheeler sitting high, dry, and perfectly upright like a giant lawn ornament in a very confused farmer's cornfield!"

Chicago’s Sky-Hi Drive-In and Restaurant operated inside a converted Douglas DC-7 airplane. Opened 1963, featuring 10 tables inside the plane's cabin, which was perched above a luncheonette serving drive-in customers. Servers dressed as stewardesses. It closed in the late 1960s.

I saw it from the outside when I was a kid, but was never in it unfortunately.
