Onkyo or Yamaha?

I would give the Yamaha a try, a silver 80wpc integrated is definitely worth the cost to ship. You may or may not be a fan of the sound, Yamaha's natural sound isn't for everyone. It won't cost you a lot to find out though.

I already have an old Technics SL-1900 in use. I’ll check out the integrated preamp of the Yamaha or keep using my Pro-Ject PhonoBox MkII, depending on how things sound.

Don’t care about having a remote.

I won’t touch a sub with a ten-foot pole.

Ha. To my ears, subs always sound sloppy and detached from the rest of the sounds, unless we’re talking big bucks and a well-tuned listening space. Even then, why go through all that when you can just have loudspeakers with a great bass response? Less processing power, tighter sound.

Plus, from a practical standpoint I live in an apartment and try to be respectful of my neighbors. Nothing makes me want to destroy stereo equipment more than someone else’s sub from another apartment or car.
 
I have had my CR 1040 for a week or so now and I really like the sound actually. I have no problem with SS equipment sounding like what it is, solid state. There are so many that are obsessed with all amps to sound "tube like" even when they have never heard anything with tubes. I love the ice cold clarity of the Yamaha stuff. It may not sound the best with every speaker but the sound is so detailed and clear that I am hearing stuff I have never heard before.....with several sets of speakers. KLH 6, and Dynaco A 25s have done the best with it.

Ah, that’s great to hear! I’m using EV FR12-2’s right now, which I love dearly but lack a little in detail and imaging. Anything I can do to reveal clarity at the source is a welcome addition to the rig.
 
LOL, sure subs can be "sloppy and detached??" It actually takes a degree of effort to set what up properly, but when you get them right ... the only way to tell they are there ... is when you turn them off!

And sure you could get full range speakers that could do the "sub bass thing??" But if you wanna do that your gonna with "full range speakers" it's gonna cost you big buck's and they are gonna have a big footprint!


After about uh 15 years or more I put my power sucking, 12 inch acoustic Visonic Sub One back in use! I was a pipe organ fan ... because I had that sub! But you know times change and I forgot ... Well when I put it back in service the other day ... I noticed the spec tag on the back??? LOL ... no wonder it was a power sucking monster?? Yeah I guess in 1973 ... they built real sub?? Frequence on my beast is freaking 16 hz to 30 hz??? I was stunned! Now I'm surprised I never blew up my LX 5's, as they roll of at 80 hz??

So you know ... good luck finding a pair of reasonably sized full range speakers hat go down to 16 hz??? That are reasonably affordable and can fit into ... non mansions??

And the Yammy, I did not about the Craver thing with that particular unit?? But I have used Yammy's for years! They all do the "Natural Sound" thing and depending on your speakers ... they may or may not sound different??

Hard and Harsh is the usual complaint, with Yamaha?? Now I have never heard that happen and I'm a horn guy, Klipsch KG's and LOL Mach One's but nope ...never heard harsh?? And of course my LX 5's Linaeum tweeters. And nope never harsh?? But oddly enough with a Yamaha HTR ... and Sansui SP1200's only my second pair of Japanese speakers in 40 years. I found this particular combo ... to be exceptionally "smooth??" I found that combo kinda odd?? As I tend to rotate HTR's, used in two channel mode a lot! But the Sansui, Sp 1200 combo was most definitely differently?? Kinda weird and unexpected??

Long way of saying ... you should get the "Yammy" anyway and perhaps you'll stumble on your on unknow combo ... or you know maybe, it's with the speakers you already have ... I don't know?? :)
 
I love that era of Yamaha amps. Typically very well built. It’d be a no-brainer for me to try it out, but it’s up to you whether you like it more or not.

Do you have a DAC connected? I too have the same amp and 100% downstream music. Acoustics are amazing but most other songs are “bright” in the tweeter and combined with the midrange, a bit muddled. I’m thinking I need a DAC.

The only DAC used is in the Samsung J7 Crown I bought to stream Spotify Premium through. Why would you think you need a DAC? Try another set of speakers first. Adding a DAC when you dont have one (Unelss you have a defective one in a CD player) wont make any difference. Speakers make by far the biggest impact on the sound of your system followed way down the list by your receiver/amp and then DAC.

What speakers are you using?

Like you Bb, I picked up last week a Yamaha CR-1040. Orig owner and except for a few bulbs out, very good condition. Hooked them to both ADS 730 and 520’s and noted the mids and tweeter ranges were very bright and annoying when compared to my lowly Technics SA 600. Streaming Spotify, certain songs just blew me away with the detail and clarity...all this without a DAC. Other rock band music (pick your own title) were lack luster at best and shrieked on the high ends to me. So I don’t think the speakers, perhaps the amp but doubt it, so think a DAC will improve the streaming quality (?). I don’t have a phono to compare but believe the issue is the quality of streaming.
