Onkyo TX-NR809 Amp - was working fine now no sound (relay click)

Hi guys,

I've had this amp for a number of years and never had an issue. Recently sometimes upon powering up the relay wouldn't click and hence no sound output. Turning it off and on again would fix it.

Then it became progressively worse. Once it was on and I had sound, the sound would stop after a min or so.

Now it simply has no sound output. The amp functions as it should with my PS4, tape deck and CD player running through it with HDMI to my TV so I have audio through my TV speakers but not through my amp speakers.

Could somebody please point me in the right direction to start fault finding the issue? It must be the main amp I imagine, yes?

The HDMI no sound issue is a known issue with several Onkyo receivers of this era. I bought the same model, TX-NR809 used about a year ago. I asked the previous owner if it had the HDMI repair done to it as I read online that Onkyo had a fix for it if it was still under warranty.
 
The warranty extension for the "no sound" issue has expired at the end of 2018. Google onkyo no sound issue and you will get all the info on the problem. I tried re-flowing the chip and it worked for about a week before dying again. I believe if you have the chip replaced it will solve the problem. I don't even know if the replacement chip is available. I have the 809 also which is now a boat anchor.......Not really but you get what I mean.

I just rand Onkyo Australia and they confirm the program ended 31st Dec 2018. If only my amp had failed 6 months earlier :-(

Homer... you see the 7 output transistors at the top of the heatsink....

Check Emitter voltages of each one... (see pic on left for pin out) - all should be 0V

Take care not to short to heatsink!

Thanks very much mate :-) I put flux around the outside of the chip and I heated mine to around 220 C on my Onkyo TX-NR809. I waited for the chip to return to room temp, switched it on and Wooohoo! It lives! I then put a small heat sink on it from Jaycar Electronics here in Australia to protect it from perhaps failing again. I hope this fix lasts as I rang Onkyo today and was told they no longer fix under warranty as of 31st December 2018 so lucky this fixed it :-D

There is a simpler diagnose: press and hold "display" , then press "on". Release both and quickly press "tone +". You can cycle through the software versions of all CPUs. If DSP shows ????????? instead of a number, it is the problem. The devices have other typical faults: the higher models have bad SMD electrolytics on the underside of the HDMI board. Also, a dead main relay might fail to switch the analog transformer. All faults lead to no sound.

So with the program ended, can you pay to have it fixed and if so how much does it run?

We had my dad's 1007 in a few years ago for the same problem. It cracked me up because the "Only Certified" repair shop was literally just a stereo repair shop in a strip mall in LA somewhere.

They fixed it alright but threw away the factory box we shipped it in, and had to the replace the faceplate for him because their box wasn't sufficient for the 50lbs of receiver inside which resulted in some cosmetic damage.

The authorised repair agent near me quoted around $400 to fix, with them simply ordering a whole new board and installing it, to which I told them I could do that myself, so what is the cost of a board? They guessed around $230 for a new board.

Funny that they couldn't be bothered simply replacing/fixing the DTS chip but I suppose that may be due time costs? Perhaps they wanted to make sure the whole board was ok?

I called them back after I fixed it so they could inform other owners it may be possible without spending lots of money. The guy joked "Do you want a job?" and was happy I solved the issue :-)

Hdmi is nice but so temperamental- as I age I dont care so much... I’m more audio than visual... and all this wank of 4K and 8k crap will send it’s purveyors to the eyesight clinic

Lol true but the chip giving me issues was the audio chip....go figure! (The board is the HDMI board but the chip is the Dolby DTS Audio chip).
