Open Baffle Epiphany!

View attachment 3499645I found these Lii F15’s on FB marketplace and had to grab them. My first foray into OB’s. I think these are Caintuk baffles. And yes, I know you get better bass response on the floor but I also enjoyed them on these stands with a small sub. I’ve definetly caught the OB bug. I’m considering a larger, thicker baffle to see how that will affect the sound.

Nice!!!

How thick are the Caintuck baffles?

They are not going to make great bass ever. What you’ve done with stands and a sub is what I do.

They are the thinner Caintuk baffles. I think it’s the “plus” version. What baffles are you running?
Caintuck Magnum baffles, thickest ones Randy makes I think. Thicker baffles to help the bass some. I may have posted some REW sweep comparisons earlier in this thread. Will look back through the posts.

Edit: looked for the post comparing thick and thinner baffles, no luck finding it. No telling which thread it was posted in.

Larger Baffles will absolutely help the F-15 with Bass. In fact many will find the Bass to be plenty depending on room. I have run both the smaller and the larger Baffles. The Decware medium baffles were my favorites however in a smaller room I found the large baffle resulting in a large sound wave was a problem for the imaging / disappearing act........................My solve was to run 2 smaller baffles
I followed Clayton Shaws design of the X-2 ( https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/spatial-audio-lab-x2-loudspeaker/ )

Mine are 4 baffles 18 X 18 and the F-15 in one setting on top of an Eminance alpha 15 in another...........Ends up being one of the best speakers I have heard

Have you tried other bass only drivers?
Hey: Yes I tried the Lii W-15...........They are inconsistent in QC I bought 2 pair and each time I ended up with 1 driver having voice coil vibration / rubbing. I currently have a pair of the Acoustic elegance dipole 15 drivers. VERY GOOD drivers. I also tried the goldwood 18" bass drivers and they were also good but were too big for my situation at the time.

What I really like about the eminence is they do bass articulation VERY VERY good. They suffer a bit in how deep they will go compared to the w-15 and the AE drivers but honestly I was always satisfied with the sound. I only bought the AE because I got a smoking good deal on them. I still have a quad of the Eminence drivers waiting on a project

And now for something really exciting. I found a pair of AER BD3 drivers used. Of course I had to buy them. Having owned them approx 15 years ago and used them in Oris Horns I knew they were excellent FR drivers. Looking around the web I saw BD designs played around with Open Baffles. They made a monstrosity with twin 15" Bass drivers over 4 feet tall. I cant use tall speakers, for me they simply will not pull off the disappearing act. BBBBUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT I can put the AER in my Clayton Shaw X-2 clones up to over my Acoustic Elegance dipole 15 drivers ends up approx 38" tall and OH My do they disappear. Highs are MUCH BETTER crystal clear. Crossing at 150 Hz so Zero movement of the AER cone (can you say lightly used) I Highly recommend the mini Quasar OB

Very cool! My baffles are very similar - bout the same height, and just a few inches wider. These drivers may be worth investigating. Hmmmm…

Just cut the holes in a 4' x 2' x 3/4" piece of birch plywood, no bracing or legs/stands, leaning against various things to hold them up for now.
Sound pretty good, bass is surprising (the 903's FS is 30+ Hz lower than the popular 852).

hey gang, haven't posted on this thread in a while...
there are a pair of SB Audience Bianco-15OB350 available locally for a decent price

i have eminence alpha As in my H-frames. would the SB's be better?
many thanks!
The Qts for the Eminence is 1.26 and SB Audience is 0.57. That seems like a big T-S Qts difference. How that manifests itself in your H frames is an unknown to me. General rule of thumb is higher Qts makes better bass in open baffles.

OK, i just read the conclusions and looked at the graphs:
martin king says H-frames lower SPL but also produce a lower frequency response
his analysis used Alpha 15As (like mine)

SPL not really an issue for me: i'm powering the H-frames with an ayima 07 and can just tweak the volume pot if i need more SPL

the posters in this thread are saying lower Qts driver has a bit more detail but doesn't go quite as low (without EQ)

i'm using a miniDSP to control the crossover point for the H-frames (full range drivers run full range; not connected to miniDSP); i guess i could tweak the crossover slope a bit if the SB woofers don't go low enough/produce enough SPL

Just depends on what you need or require, I have a pair of 12"s with a QT of 0.82 and FS of 32 Hz in a U baffle, they do everything I want for my low SPLs and the music I listen to.
EDM at 120dBs NO.
Horses for courses.

My new OB's with the 12" Zenith's, not sure I'm going to add bass help. Of course the last octave is missing, but that's okay with me.

right now i have 12" zeniths in caintuck baffles on top of those H-frames; think the zeniths need a little on the bottom end YMMV
love the zeniths!

Which version?
There are differences.

What size is the baffle?

Likely we don't listen to the same music.
