Open Baffle Epiphany!

But in the context of high frequency drivers, are they just was well off with or without a baffle? Imagine a dipole, open back full range 4 or 5 inch driver. So there is a back wave. The crossover point is 350hz. So not much bass here.

Is a baffle going to change anything sonically or is the baffle just for convenience, stability, security (so the driver does not roll around etc.)?
If all you want are high mids, and High freq. You will be fine, Lower mids and of course Bass will suffer. I cant answer what a 350 Hz Freq will do for the sound. I try to cross low enough that Vocals are on just the Full range drivers. I dont care for having vocals on the bass drivers. Muddies up the vocals IME..., YMMV

I can’t think of any speaker system out there…..2 way, 3 way and beyond….that have the woofer crossed so low that no vocals will ever come through.

And seas exotica 8” full range? That’s hard core. How do you have them set up? Pics?

I dont honestly concern myself with what other speaker designers are doing, I know what I want & thats my bell weather. I cross over at 150 Hz most times. I do have a pair of Oris horns with Lowther PM2a drivers, I cross those at 250 Hz because the horn has a 250 hz cut off.

I am building a pair of largish bookshelf speakers with the seas they will be approx 2.1 Cubic feet (22 x 16 x 15) Baltic birch cabinets. Its a clone of John Kalinowski's design. I owned his for a spell & rergreted selling them almost immediately. I kept his dimensions & paid close attention to his cabinets. I will post pics when I get done. I have the panels cut, Just routed the speaker holes and counter sink this morning. I have to order my walnut veneer. Here in NC it gets pretty miserable with humidity so I limit my time out doors at this time of year

I am currently running my Lii F-15 drivers over my H-Frames. One of my favorites It crosses at 150 Hz with the lii running 60Hz up

Heres Pic of the SEAs exotic Bookshelves I promised, Baltic Birch, 16" wide, 15" deep, 21.5 Tall, Motorboard is 1.5" thick. Sound damn fineIMG_20260421_192247629.jpgIMG_20260421_192238541.jpg

Not sure if I want to paint the stands, I just finished them approx 90 pounds per side. Very dense & solid, also considering Gaia feet
but would be nearly impossible for me to move. Terrible pic, Hard to get decent images with an essential tremor

My vote is paint the stands and the speakers. Use some plastic and pain them where they are so you don't have to worry with moving them.

Why not open baffle?
I have Lii F-15 Open Baffles That I swap in & out................Honestly The Lii are likely my Favorite speakers. They present a fullness that is intoxicating. Very life like. I am in the middle of a large purge of equipment and must make a couple small baffles for my Bass augmentation. I use a sorta clone of the spatial X2 OB small footprint but huge sound

I'm considering trying a Crown XTi 4002 to power the Eminence Alpha 15s in my open baffles. I'm curious if others, especially anyone using Alphas, have tried this amp or something similar. The woofers in my OBs are currently powered by a Bryston 4B, low-passed with an active analog crossover. The Crown would also allow me to experiment with the DSP settings, and it would be interesting to see how the higher damping factor controls the woofer and impacts performance (for better or worse would need to be determined). Lastly, I would do a fan mod on the amp to ensure it stays quiet so no worries there.

I assume that you would use these, paired with full range drivers. What drivers and how are you driving them?

A little further up this page, post #5,324, there's a link to the build thread. Knowing the Alpha 15 is really popular, I was mainly interested in if people here have tried it with the higher-end Crown amps.
