Open Baffle Epiphany!

I wonder how those $3700 Grant Fidelity OB's would compare to these which use the same drivers cost under $500 and are based on MJK's design.

Kind of what I was saying in post #1296. Take the $500 you spent for the parts, add another $250 for another pair of woofers, another grand for table saw, router, other tools and lumber and you still have two grand left in the bank.
And yeah, it would be cool to hear a direct comparison between the two.

Tools don't count as you can re-use over and over; usually a one time expense.

True, but I was thinking even starting totally from scratch, and never using those tools again, you'd still be way ahead.
I'm reminded of the time I paid a "pro" to rout a cavity in my guitar. For the money I could have bought a router plus the template and done a better job. Live and learn.

Does the single H-frame provide sufficient bass or do you use EQ?

They provide plenty of bass.

The nice thing about H-frames is once you build a pair you can substitute a variety of FR drivers for the HF.

With the same H-frames I've used Betsy's, Beta 12LTA's, and Tang Bands. Since the TB's and Lowthers use the same cut outs I'll soon be trying them over the H-frames.

Depends on how you define "sufficient".

I found them damn impressive for what they are, but ultimately they fell short of my needs....which is the ability to reproduce content below 35 Hz without EQ and the ability to maintain composure reproducing first octave content well into the mid 90's SPL. If you only listen at moderate volume and never feel the desire to goose it a little bit and/or don't have any need to reproduce the really deep stuff then I agree with PG.

Outch, I did it and put together a wild combination of the two horn speaker I got and an Eminence Alpha 15A and I was expecting a lot but I'm speechless.

Still pretty raw but it works. The horns are definitivly too loud and need some dampening but in general very promising!
I will pull the horns a little but down with a L pads in order to get the curve better. I did not wanted to go with an active crossover since I try to stay silicon-free in this setup.
Bass roll off is there but I think I can control it by getting the horns down and the whole setup is still very efficient and does not require a lot of amp power. Running it right now with my M8 rebuilds and its just great!

That looks quite nice. Paint the edges black to hide the plywood, add a favorite stain and poly to the front, you'll have yourself a pro looking speaker :thmbsp:

They are still pretty raw and painting will come when they are running good.
Running at the moment different resistor combinations to the horns to get the harshness out of the highs. Would be good if I would know their efficiency. They are a Foster FHT-2 and a Utah FHT-4. Any idea?

The H frame subs, not sure who designed them but poultry built them as far as I know.
The Tektons are an unusual design as they use the speaker in the back to cancel/control the back-wave of the front firing driver and provide input to the cab for the front port but are not PG's design/build.

The Tekton OB4.5 has outstanding micro detail and imaging but without the H-frames it's lacking in LF. Placement was difficult in my listening room as they had to share space with some larger OB's. I liked them best in near field and would prefer them over the other speakers mentioned.

A friend now has them on stands in his bedroom powered by a wonderful 300B.

I noticed that Eric ( of Tekton ) no longer sells them or any other Fostex based speakers. He once told me that the Fostex 4.5's were his favorite driver.

Is there an issue with inletting the drivers slightly or mounting them from the rear. I know sometimes there's a time-alignment issue, but will it matter in this case. My reasons are aesthetic only.

Man the pressure .... two of my designs being built. Have fun, I am very confident you will be happy with the results.
