open baffle project

ive been messing with diffearnt baffles and thinking just a long part of wood but hey its DIy and messin im having fun

what do you guys think i should do

Since you're just messing around, find a couple bigger chunks of cardboard, like of a big appliance carton or the like and use them. You can mount the speakers directly to it and lose the stands, plus have a real baffle, cuz you don't really have anything in the pic.
 
Open baffles are fun, and can really sound nice . . . I have some :thmbsp:.

The little Foxtex are nice drivers, but have really low Qts, not ideal for ob. You'll get NO bass, no matter how big the baffle.

But if you're just "messin" then throw 'em on a piece of wood (or cardboard) you have laying around. Maybe 16" wide or so, 24" to 30" tall, and see what's what.

Caution: If you like what you hear; it won't be long before you are building larger baffles to accommodate the 15" Alphas that you suddenly realized you just need to have :D
 
Or you could build a horn....

go down to the Aussie equivalent of Home Depot (cheap building supplies) and get a sheet of cheap drywall, whip out a box cutter and make 2 rectangles, about 92cm wide, 82high, use the rest of the drywall to make 15cmx82 strips to lean them against (a 10 degree angle is probably going to work the best, mount the fostex and move 'em about a meter out from the wall.

you may want to try them with a woofer....
in that case, put the woofer on the baffle and put the fostex on a second baffle15x22cm, at the top center, 90 degrees to the main baffle and pointing straight up...

and get set for some of the most amazing imaging in the world.

It was worth a Master's class in design... it quickly turned to OB's and then ends with my first pair (which I am listening to right now.) This is the thread about putting together my first pair (which are way more complex than they need to be, but the family likes the way they look).

OB's are essentially just a flat board with a driver mounted almost in the middle. The baffle is just there to keep the front sound waves from interfering with the back sound waves. (the front and back waves are out of phase, and they cancel each other out) The bigger the baffle, the more bass.

In post #10 in the above thread Mike posts a graph that shows the effect on the low end as the baffle gets larger. Basically, bigger is better but your family may not be ok with having half the room blocked off by 2 4'x8' sheets of plywood. The dimensions that I posted above are about the best balance I think.

Below is a simple exploded view.

--The line is the baffle, just a flat board. It can be plywood, drywall, whatever. Of course, the heavier and less resonant the better, but for prototypes cardboard would even work.
--Moving left is the speaker-- I like OB's the best with one full range speaker. But I don't have a pair of good full range drivers right now so....
--Moving left a bit more you see a small baffle at the top and a small driver. *Note: that baffle needs to be there whether you are using a second driver or not. It really tightens up the mid range, a LOT.
--Most of the designs you will see have the mid and tweeters facing forward. I prefer to have them facing up- the soundstage and the image then extends up to the ceiling and back to the rear wall. Huge, open, spacious and natural imaging.
--the next item to the left is just a board for the baffle to rest against. It's cut so that the bottom sits flat on the floor and the baffle itself leans back at a 10 degree angle. On my prototypes it was just hacked out with a sheet rock knife and baffle was just duct taped onto it so it wouldn't fall over.

The whole thing ends up being embarrassingly simple, and the sound is extraordinarily. Mine is still populated with drivers from midrange consoles from the '60s.

Bass really does roll off-- they do work best with a sub (as long as the sub is very subtle it won't wonk up the imaging)

Obviously they can be very cheap. My next set will be made of only drywall $5.78 per sheet. The drivers, again, cast offs from consoles.

The driver needs to be off set so you don't get cancleation. The big wood horns that Andyman posted a pic of are mine. They were origanally open baffle but because the driver is centered they had massive cancleation in the region. I boxed up the back and the bass came back.

yup, if it's square in the middle (equidistant from each side) all 3 open sides will roll off at the same frequency. (ouch) Mine are off set at about 1/3... so on a 90cm baffle the center of the cone would be about 60cm, not 45. Same with the vertical plane, center is about 25cm from the bottom rather than 40. Did I employ great science? Wisdom? No. I made a mistake on the first one and it worked out well. Hey, the most I could've lost is a $6 sheet of drywall.

The JE labs baffle is simple and elegant; Markus here at AK is a big fan. The illusion :-) of fuller bass may be obtained with drivers of high Qts; the overall effect can be astonishingly fullrange even with a relatively modest baffle (as is Joseph Esmilla's).

FWIW, here is a quick and dirty picture of the cutoff behavior as a function of baffle width, based on an equation found on teh webs :-)
