Oppo BDP-105 or Schiit Audio Modi 2 Multibit? DAC comparisons.

Fair enough, but if the Modi is a "preview" of the Bifrost I'm then not interested in the latter either. Respectable gear, but doesn't work for me, perhaps I will revisit if my setup changes.
Sure...I get it. Each step up is more refinement in the same concept.
Frankly many prefer the Delta Sigma version.
IMHO the Chord Mojo is far ahead of them...maybe not the Yaggy MB.
As mentioned the Mojo deals with digital realm noise, errors etc better then most dacs... never heard digital music with such ease, flow an preciseness before till the Mojo.
Only indepedant reviews reveal those specs.

And maybe some of this has to do why the mojo Seems so smooth and unforced. The Schiits seem to have a forced liveliness, that throws off the timing and levels.
With certain program material things seem backwards so to speak it's hard to explain...
Yet is still like the Bifrost MB for a lot of music. It's nice having choices!!

To my ears, the Mojo gives you something I haven't heard from any DAC before. Ive heard Benchmarks, Oppos, Emotiva, Teac/ Esoteric, etc in my system (modded AMT3's Heils)...
Flow...easiness and detail/ preciseness in perfect measure.
Pretty darn amazing in my humble opinion!!

I found I like NOS multibit sound, or maybe 2x oversampled max on some material.
Sure... that mid range detail that gets grayed out by most Dacs
Lots of texture the the Schiit MB.
The Mojo has the same detail more or less.. but totally smooth and liquid..

Nice!!
I think Schiit well eventually refine their units at some point.
As mentioned I like the Bifrost, it will be sticking with me rotating in my two systems..but the Mojo is really hard to beat.. it does everything pretty darn well... with few, if any drawbacks, except for the format in home system application.

I don't know what "refine" means in this case. They are supposedly the "experts" so I'd think they were supposed to get it right on the first try or get real close. I suspect it is right, but some may prefer the sound that is less right but easier to listen to.

I have the Modi Multibit, Bifrost Multibit with vs 5 USB. Both are awesome Dacs for the money. Very similar, but the Bifrost is more refined, tighter bass.
However...after living with the Chord Mojo for a month, it easily bests both Schiit units, in terms of ease, musicality and flow. It just does everything right IMHO. The Bifrost has a tight soundstage right in front of the speakers, were the Mojo has a huge flowing soundstage, a much more precise instrument placing. I think the ultralow noise of the Mojo, better overall specs has a lot to do with the ease flow and tone of the music. Pretty cool!!
The Bifrost MB has more "meat" so to speak and is exciting and dynamic, but the flow and timing seems off, or even backward, at times compared to the Mojo. Both are great, and some is a matter of taste for sure. The Brifrost is solid and heavy, and much easier to integrate in a main system. If you aren't using a PC, you need a USB type charger to keep it going. Even with a computer, you need to free port, one exclusively for charging.
The Mojo is more of a challenge to integrate in a main system, but it's well worth the effort!! I'm not sure how they do, in such a small package...pretty darn amazing!!
By the way..if you have, and are using lower then the 5.0 USB board on your Bifrost, get the upgrade. Especially with vs1,2 etc. They sound marginal at best. Schiit finally got it right with vs 5.0 sounds awesome!! Easy to install, just watch the LED, easy to bend.

Wow, there's nothing like completely derailing a thread, is there? You have no idea how any of this sounds compared to the Oppos, which was the point of the thread. I always scratch my head at such posts. First, you bought both the Modi and Bifrost, and apparently kept them past the trial date before spending another $500 or so on a Chord Mojo. So right there, one has to ask, instead of laying out over $1300 on 3 DACs, why not simply do your research and then use that money on a superior single DAC or two? And BTW, most find the the Modi Multi is quite close in sound to the Bifrost multi, perhaps you've made some connection errors.

Second, your impressions of the Bifrost are so far off, they are simply an outier to the reality that everyone else has experienced. The timing is off, or even backward(that doesn't even make sense), and it has a "tight" soundstage? That's simply flat wrong. The timing of the Bimby is quite fast, with great PRaT, as they call it. It's the best I've experienced and it's better than the Oppo 95 I used to own, for instance. The imaging goes beyond the speakers and is organic and just so real with 3d placement of instruments. You've either got a defective unit or have done something wrong. It actually outperforms the Nad C565BEE cd player using mp3 files to the Nad's redbook cd reproduction. The Nad retailed for around $900 I believe, and was superior to the Oppo 95 when I compared them.

The other thing is, you recommend that if one has a non 5.0 USB version of the Bifrost, then one should upgrade because the old versions sound "marginal" at best. But you've not owned the prior version of the Bifrost, so are blowing smoke about how it sounds, which is a nasty thing to do. I'd suggest starting your own thread instead of hacking into others, and not making broad pronouncements about the sound of components you've not heard.

Ok...
Number one I don't have to justify my buying habits.
For your information I bought these second hand if that matters to you.
And why should it?!?
I was stating my opinions.
The Bifrost MB had vs one board.
Marginal at best. I can provide you pictures of the old board and the new board and the sticker I put on the back of the unit.
I'm glad you like the by BiFrost that's awesome again I'm stating my opinions and experiences, they don't have to be like yours that's the beauty of the forum.
We all have varying opinions and experiences
I disagree that the Modi MB and BiFrost sound exactly the same... I stated that I thought were the differences. take them or leave them I could care less.
And the Oppo was a borrowed unit I can forward you a picture of it in my system if that would make you feel better
If you disagree that's fine I don't have a problem with that. I'm just sharing my opinions, you can take them or leave them that's your choice. I never said they were fact, merly my opinions.
Just as yours are, opinions.
In my opinion is maybe you're the one derailing the thread?
Or your the one "hacking"... whatever that supposed to mean...
Along with implying I'm lying, or something along that line, as well as being fairly rude.
Personally I could care less cause there's one like you in every crowd.
Any one that doesn't follow his line of thinking, opinions, purchasing whatever, needs to be "educated" , or is "thread hacking "etc.
And jump on someone for having a differing opinion, good luck with that... self crowned super member?!!
Talk about blowing smoke.... give me a break!!!
Obviously you don't understand how AK works, most of the stuff is opinions and experiences.
And I would suggest you not imply people arent telling the truth.... but again that's your deal...
I've been on AK for years and you're the first person that's ever accused me of that...
But given your MO, I'll take it for what it's worth. Not much...
And if it was me, and I saw someone had a different opinion, I would think, hmmm, maybe I'm missing something here? Instead of implying just the opposite...

Ah, yes, a "rest of the story" poster who conveniently adds in details after being challenged on it. Whatever.

My main point is simply that to prefer the Chord unit over the Schiit units is fine, individual taste being what it is, but your description of both the Modi and Bifrost is so off the charts that something else is at play. Giving your opinion that the earlier versions of the Bifrost are marginal, when you've never owned them is of no benefit to anyone, and might mislead some.

Buying multiple dacs and then selling off at a big loss is your business. But if you really are after best quality sound, buying a single higher end unit would be the way to go. I'm not the god of anything, but I will challenge off the wall posts occasionally.

Edit: I see you keep editing your post above as well, changing your facts. Good for you.

Well I didn't say I own any of the earlier versions of the BiFrost I was talking about the USB board.
I suggested maybe the Delta Sigma version might be more along his line.
And maybe I didn't explain everything fully, frankly I was busy yesterday but those were my opinions and I'm sticking to them.
And again you're attacking my buying habits... when you don't even know the full extent of what I bought, prices, many of these used and have traded some of them. Talk about jumping to conclusions.
Regardless I don't have to explain myself to you if you don't like my opinions tough.
Keep your opinions of me to yourself I don't need to hear them.
Frankly no one else wants to hear them either.
But guys like you can't do that..
I could imply a lot of things there but I won't.
In my opinion you didn't like my opinions on the Bifrost.
So instead of having a civilized discussion, or you just decided to attack me and call me a liar thanks a lot !!
Whatever dude... again good luck with that and your thread, or is it your thread?
You would think so by the way your ranting.,.

You haven't heard the Schiit dacs with the earlier USB board in question. So to say its performance is marginal is silly. You have no idea what its performance is like because you haven't heard it. I see you still don't get that, which I'm not surprised at.

And my points about your critiques of the Bifrost multibit stand. <shrug> To not like the sound is one thing, but no one, that's not one owner I've read(and I did a ton of reading on this dac) complained about its timing being off and imaging being tight. I've read hundreds of pages of threads and these specific complaints just don't come up. So I suspect something is wrong in the way you've made the connections to and from it. Or your system is screwy.

Thanks, but I'll keep posting whenever it suits me , which by the way is a lot less than you in this very thread, for instance.

Sure, jumping to conclusions again and propping yourself with your opinions, like they are fact...good luck with that.
Funny how people like you when they disagree with someone go to the bottom of the barrel and just trash the person.
But that seems to be the flavor of the day.
And I will post as I please too...

And just to add, as far as my system being screwy... you're not even close
I have had a number of local AK members over at the house, and they really appreciate how good my system sounds.
So they must have screwy ears too?!?!
Again you're jumping to conclusions...
Regardless I'm growing tired of dealing with your biased and inaccurate opinions of me and my system or whatever else you've commented on.
Good luck with the attack the person defense... but obviously you find some sort of comfort in it

Well okay then, hope you find a dac that is a keeper. Maybe for you it's the Chord.

Edit: that said, I notice you keep editing your posts and sometimes after I responded to them you've added more "details". Way to go, changing your story as you go.

FIY, I have 2 systems, so I like rotating different Dacs. I preferred the Bifrost MB over the Modi MB. The Bifrost does a lot of good things, but has some drawbacks compared to the Chord, in my opinion. But I still like it. Nice to have some variety. No Dac is perfect, or the end all. They have come a long way, and I'm sure will continue to refine. All good things in my opinion.
As far as editing my post, I don't see a problem with that.
I'm not sure what you mean by changing my story?
The editing has to do with correcting typos and trying to make it clearer to understand.
People do it all the time.
I had a small op ed column years ago and I used to edit all the time before the final revision I don't see a problem with that.
Thanks

I just looked at it...it IS nice.

I am strongly considering the Oppo Sonica streamer and Oppo UDP-205.

I wish the Oppo UDP-203 had 2 ch. rca out. It would save me $800.

Well my OPPO UDP-203 has 2 ch. RCA output that I use to feed my whole house 2 ch. audio distribution setup.
I menu configured both the UPD-203 and it`s predecessor BDP-103 for mix down of any multichannel above 2 ch. audio to feed movie sound tracks to the stereo systems..

Works great for me.. I use the OPPO`s split HDMI outs set for dedicated video for the projector & and the other HDMI output configured for audio only feeding my Integra processor for the living room`s A/V 7.1 system(the only multi channel audio system setup in my house)

Regards, OKB
