Over used and incorrectly used phrases...

Being a cranky old coot is great fun. On the subject, who played old coots better in the movies--Robert Duvall or Walter Brennan? Stumpy in Rio Bravo was old coot at it's finest but Duvall is pretty good too.

His portrayal of a dimentia stricken old coot in Slingblade was iconic.

Oh ****...did I just say that?

"I almost spit coffee all over my keyboard" in describing the hilarity of a forum post.

One member of a forum posted this so many times, I figured he must have muscle control problems, or was far too easily amused.

"If you can't hear the difference, your system must not be able to resolve it" or "You just don't know how to listen" ('pretty sure I learned how to do that more than a few years ago).

Again, not audio related, but using "begs the question" when the person really means "suggests or invites the question". ("Begs the question" refers to circular reasoning -- assuming what was to be shown.)

A friend of mine uses the phrase "Buggers the question." He is an ESL teacher.

"Reach out" as in:
"I will reach out to our home office to get that information for you."
Way too touchy-feely

"I have a guy who does so and so" rather than "I know a guy who does so and so". Like you're some kind of big shot.

"You don't understand", as stated by melodramatic members of the opposite sex, often in their self-absorbed second and third decade of existence. If a guy says it to me he's instructed to go change his tampon without delay.

Or people saying you don't understand when you understand damned well; you just disagree.

Instead of "needs to be replaced" people say "needs replaced". I heard once it's regional Pennsylvania dialect, but it bugs me.

That one really irritates me for some reason. I don't remember hearing anyone say that until recently, now I seem to read or hear it all the time.

Another one I'm tired of reading / hearing is "built like a tank".

Throws a ridiculous sound stage.

I'm waiting for this to be used to describe an audio system:

Wounds my heart with a monotonous languor.

John

Or, "I had MY tech completely go over my newly purchased receiver."

That has a disgusting air of superiority to it. The guy is not YOUR tech. He is A tech.

It's like the time Jagger called Charlie Watts, "my drummer" and Watts went over to Jagger's place and punched him in the nose.

I always think/thought when somebody writes, "needs replaced" they were just unaware they were leaving out the "to be" or really meant to write "needs replacing".
