I was wondering about that too. You'd think something local maybe? The FM signal meter looks like Phillips late 60s early 70s stuff. The "walnut grain" veneer (says so on the back) would seem typically British/American. While those shiny-with-black nobs look more Japanese of the time to me. So, no idea..

The 8-track does not appear to be a recorder, that is unfortunate. But the unit has an "aux out". However, no "aux in" so that won't work to well with an RTR or something. Maybe it was more intended for small shops and such? You could hook up a 100v system or some other amp to the aux out then I geus.

It was intended for home use. Some used them for background music in establishments.

It has a phono input, but if I had to guess I would say it was for a ceramic cart, no ground wire lug. That would make it a line input for all intents and purposes.

Several years ago. a Telex 8 track changer was offered on Craigslist for $10. I responded on the same day it was posted and made the one hour drive to a rural home to pick it up. The seller described his home so I could discern which was his. When I knocked at the door, a woman answered claiming she knew nothing about a Craigslist ad, had no knowledge of an 8 track changer and that her boyfriend/husband was not at home.

C'est la vie.

More recently, about two years ago, I responded to a FB Marketplace ad for the same unit. By this time, I myself had moved to a rural area and it was the seller who lived in a fairly large town. The round trip would have been about 8 hours. A number of pre-recorded tape cartridges were offered along with the changer and some of them were of interest to me. The seller would not ship nor was he willing to deliver or meet me part way. Since the weather was good and I have made road trips for lesser reasons, I was prepared to make the drive which would have been a pleasant one.

But the woman who owned the home I moved into as a ground floor suite tenant, forbade me to go over concerns that I would bring Covid into the home when I returned.

So c'est la vie again.

Fate determined that I was not intended to own such a device.
