PA1002A workaround / replacement

Thanks for the information.
But unfortunately, the SX-980 isn't complete without FM muting.;)
I'll build the following version, test it, and report back.

I am very late to this thread...as I begin to sort out my own Sx980. Just incredible work by all I must say. A huge BRAVO to everyone.

I have seen the replacement boards, components and fully stuffed versions all available on ebay from Ben which is great.

Then I find this thread and the latest posts aimed at incorporating the muting into a similar package - magnificent.

So....not0815 ..any success with the circuit you proposed above?.. did you build and test? ...

I've had no response from Sven(not0815) above about his solution above...so decided to search around a bit more. I note in several places that a PA4004 could well be a direct replacement for the PA1002...with or without the A ..unknown? I've seen a few pics of receiver tuner boards with a 4004 fitted where a 1002 would normally sit.. so figured must be some truth to it.

I cannot find much more info about it ... certainly no datasheet sadly. Anyway..a quick search online and I found a PA4004 on the auction site, in Europe for a little under €30. I promptly clicked and am now awaiting its arrival. For €30 gotta be worth a shot.

Until it arrives and I get to fit & test it ... is there any info available about why these 1002's fail so readily?.. and more importantly...how we might prevent it? ... I've read every PA1002 thread on AK but cannot see anything that might throw some light on this.

Obviously..the last thing I want to do is find one of the (now v. rare) single chip solutions...have it fitted and working for a while...only to have it fail only a little further down the line.

Wondered if any of the experts had spent any time figuring out why they fail...and what we could all do to help prevent it happening. It might just be a simple solution..an extra cap ...a slightly higher value somewhere that protects it a bit more. ..I am speculating..but you get the idea.

cheers all
Graeme
