I'm not sure what components you are referring to. It just seems like a blanket statement, but most resistors in any component aren't in the signal path, so the impact of thermal noise from most resistors in any given component will be negligible. However, the resistors we are discussing here lie at the input to the gain stage of a phono preamplifier. As such, any noise they impart on the signal will be amplified by a factor of ~40dB.

The resistors I used in my parallel loading plugs were 1/2W, 2% metal film resistors that cost me $1.49 for a 4-pack at my local Fry's. The 1/2W rating is larger than necessary, but I was in a hurry and they were the only metal film resistors in stock at my local store. I could have gotten a 4-pack of 1/4W, 5% carbon film resistors for $0.99, but is it really worth saving 50 cents on something as critical as the input stage to a phono preamplifier?
