Picked up a Luxman PD-272 table - anyone using these?

Just got it set up this evening with an ‘80s Grado. Cartridge has only around 100 hrs on it; got it NOS a few years ago. This combo sounds very nice to me and the table works perfectly.

The protective tube on the headshell fingerlift was installed at the factory. Don't see those on these tables very often. But then I've seen ADS speakers with the dome covers still on the drivers from new and a Sony PS-X7 I picked up still had the plastic film on the dust cover.

Bought mine used about 25 yrs ago and still I'm deep in love with it.

It's an absolutely "no hassle" deck. Sounds and plays wonderful.

Only things I did a while ago was changing the capacitors, all the smaller electrolytics with film caps and doubled the big electrolytic in the power supply.
Most important thing was changing the notorious Rifa caps in the power supply, they are known for bursting somewhen.

I have the same TT. Your comment triggerd me, I have to change these caps too. I tested the TT some weeks ago and I had to adjust the speed pot to the end to get it aligned with the 50Hz strobe.

I listen very rare at vinyl. I don't like the 'dull' sound, no dynamic.
 
Pity, @Marcel27......if your turntable system sounds "dull" then there's definitely something not quite right with it, unless of course you are playing records that are not recorded well or have suffered some sort of damage in their lifetime, or any other of a myriad of variables, including a cartridge that is not performing as it should that may be causing such a listening experience as many report the precise opposite of what you are presenting. Do you have anyone in your vicinity that might be able to help you diagnose what is going on? You live in a very beautiful part of the world, amigo!!!

Hi Marcel, the speed issue ist not a big problem.

Just center the outside speed pots and adjust the speeds with the small pots VR2 and VR3 on the motor control board.

And what you call "dull sound" should have other reasons, worn stylus, poor adjustments of tracking force or tracking angle. Also wrong adaption of the system to the phono stage maybe a reason.

Normally vinyl can be exceptional dynamic and clear.

I did a calibration with my Firato Hi-Fi test (2) LP. The transverse pressure compensation was to high and needle pressure to low - Sounds good now.

Just cleaned the speed potentiometers and there was no need for up trimming the front speed rotary knobs.

But please change at least the two RIFA caps on the power supply board to WIMAs or similar, those are ticking time bombs...
 
Changed the Rifa's. They went pretty bad over the years. I added a used PET 400V and 600V type, both 0.047uF, changed the Elna 2200uF 35V into 3300uF 50V and used the 240V transformer tab. In the EU the voltage is about 238V today, it was 220V and rising to 240V over the last 20 years. The old Elna cap still measured 2745 uF.

The Rifas sure were overdue, and they smell really bad when they crack ! :yikes:

The higher capacity of the Elna cap is also a sign of defective, a high voltage leaking makes your meter measure wrong.
It's like when you fill a bucket with a hole at the bottom with water and measure how much water you needed to fill it....:biggrin:

Ahh, BTW, where in Europe do you live ?
 
Ich wohne im Bayerischen, genauer in Mittelfranken bei Nürnberg. Das ist schon ein ganzes Eck weg...

I'm located in Bavaria, more precise in Mid Franconia near Nuremberg. Still quite a distance...
