Pioneer A-88X

Hi,
I've snagged a Pioneer A-88X, I've cleaned all of the switches etc this arvo. Hooked it up and wow!
My questions are, just how good are they? And what reasonably priced speakers go we with these?

They are VERY good - IMHO. I have had the "smaller" version of that Amp - the A-77X since 1985 and it is still in service today. They are the precursor to the Elite range black face with the rosewood side panels. Your mileage may vary but lately, I like Klipsch these days. My A-77X is currently driving a couple of Athena book-shelfs (no longer in production) and sounds really good. I suspect you will like what you hear even with a quality pair of book-shelfs and it won't hurt the wallet too much.

It’s an excellent amplifier!! True dual mono design 120 wpc and part the Pioneer early Elite lineup ( Before Pioneer started use that label) Good catch. The rarer model has the multi voltage selector switch on the rear

I believe the multi voltage selector model was mainly sold to overseas servicemen through the PX. My 77X was purchased by me when I was in Berlin, it has the multi voltage selector switch on the back and also came with the faux rosewood side panels which were also seen on the "Elite" series.

What sized allen key did you need to get the main volume knob off with?
I've only noticed now that mine just spins a full 360deg and feels very loose in hand.
I'm hoping that the set screws just need tightening and that the volume pot itself hasn't been destroyed (I suspect by the hand fisted removalists I just engaged to move house).

What sized allen key did you need to get the main volume knob off with?

I unfortunately don't know the answer to your question, but it is almost certainly a metric Allen wrench. And smaller than you might think. If I were going to guess, I would guess 1.5mm, but that is a guess. However, Pioneer did use a 1.5mm on something older than your amplifier.

Turns out it was just loose set screws, two of them and a 1.5mm Allen key was needed to set things right.
However, the amp now has another problem...a dead left channel. C'est la vie.
