Well I just got this beast and looks like I got a dud cause the play stops after a few seconds, counter does not work and FF and RE are not working. I thought as long as it is a dud there is no harm in going in there to try to fix it. That is why I needed a service manual even though I have never done anything like this. :scratch2:

start by getting the belt and pulley kit from Wjoe! comes with good instructions...
install them and post back, then we can solve the rest from there

I will be doing this exact same thing with my 1000 so I will e watching this thread closely and a big Thank You go's out to santashooter for his words of encouragement
You will also need to be aware of the reel sensor (the black thing with the wires that come out of it) and make sure it works right.

before meassuring it - you have to check the counterbelt - there should be two belts - a long and a short - the short belt goes from the tapesensor to the counter itself.
Think there has been a recent thread about this issue, i'll try to locate it

Replace the belts and pulleys first, they are usually the main culprit. Then think about replacing the tape presence switch if that doesn't fix the problem. More than likely it's the belt(s) to the tape counter. It's lots of fun replacing the belts and pulleys.
have only been inside such a deck once, not much worse than replacing the capstanbelt on a Hitachi D980 - well,
some has tried it before, so what's the problem ?

it is fairly easy, as long as you take care of the circlips (or the "jesus-clips", because you go "Oh Jesus" when one gets airborn) and you follow the instructions - it took me about an hour to do it...

I covered the C-clip with the palm of my hand, so it didn't fly to far - so yes, but otherwise take 2 hours of searching on the floor into the calculations

if and when i'm feeling extreemely bored - and has to throw something in the dumpster - i sometimes find myself into taking things completely apart, thereby collecting all those small "hard to find" thingies :yes:
You'll never know when you need a thing from that collection, quite often sooner than expected.:scratch2:
