Pioneer flea market find. My first system. I’m hooked.

Or a Realistic Lab 400 direct drive TT. A nice mid-fi table from '79-'80. Also other LAB 4XX and Lab 5XX models. Or a nice Dual or Pioneer....
Like PL570 in pic. Or PL530 etc.

Wow, what an awesome start... my first audio components also came from a flea market.. many years ago. You need a BIC turntable to pair with that. My own humble opinion of course!
Me too, southern california swap meet, 125 bucks all in one system with a turntable and 8-track. Kept it for a few years, sold it along with all my 8 tracks to a neighbor for rent money in like 1981 or 82. In 1982 my rent in the Hill Top area of Tacoma was $115.00 a month for a studio with a shared bathroom.

Wonderful! I don't know vintage equipment very well, but that looks like a TOTL model.

It is a nice receiver, but there were 3 models higher than it. The SX-1080, SX-1280, and SX-1980. Below it was the SX-880, SX-780, SX-680, and SX-580. I believe Pioneer kept the earlier SX-450 as the bottom unit and did not bother coming out with a replacement for it. So that would make 5 receivers below it and 3 above it. So upper half, but closer to the middle than the top. But, again, a fine receiver. Given the typical prices on vintage gear these days, I would not bother trying to upgrade to one of the higher models. I would probably sell the speakers and buy something else, though a lot of people here seem to like the CS-99A, which, when new, was second to the top of the CS line of speakers, with the CS-63DX being the top (and significantly better in my opinion). But, when the SX-980 was made, they had a higher line of speakers than their CS line; the CS line were mostly old models that Pioneer kept making for a while.
