They most likely just fed the woofers a low frequency signal below the tuning frequency of the port so the driver unloads and starts behaving badly. It doesn't take much to make them move like that. Just a little psychological marketing trick to make it appeal to the SPL addicts: "Whoa, look at that woofer move...those must crank! Sweet!"
