Pioneer SA 8500 rebuild

I have an SA 8500 I've had for about two years now. It works and sounds great. Is there any reason to have any work done now to make it perform better or update components or just wait until it needs a repair?

Yes. Many of the Caps have certainly dried out some from the 30+ years of it's life (providing no prior replacement). And there are "some" improved upon components that can keep her singing for many years to come. In addition to a thorough cleaning of all switches, pots and controls, which is invaluable in prolonging the life and making it perform that much better. Just take your time, be methodical in approach and use the knowledge and experience on AK.

Having the SM is a great start. There is no "easy" parts replacement listing. You will need to do some extensive searching here on AK and look for the most recent postings of the caps and such for the 8500. These parts "lists" are updated quite often, as newer parts are identified and become known as superior replacements, so be careful what you compile. Once you have it in order, post it on AK for some of the more experienced people to peruse and make tweaks/suggestions to.

EDIT::: I did a quick search, and didn't turn up too much on this unit. I would clean it up really well, then pick a board and start re-capping it. Power supply board is a decent place to begin usually. Pay CLOSE attention to the orientation of the caps (Neg and pos leads). Power it on after each board has been recapped and make DC offset adjustments and such to ensure that the tolerances stay in range so other boards/components do not get damaged by the possible changes in specs. Do some research and build yourself a Dim Bulb Tester (it's easy) and it will save your ass if something was to go awry.

recap it, then if you want to "go nuts":

phono amp 2sa725, 2sc1313 >> ksa992, ksc1845

control amp 2sa726, 2sc1313 >> ksa992, ksc1845

power amp 2sa726, 2sc1451 > ksa992, KSC3503

protection 2sc945, 2sc1384 >>ksc2383, ksc2690

power supply rebuild/beef up - a bit more than I can do right now.

just to be sure, this is a SA-8500 and not a SA-8500II ??

if you do up a list in the format of:

zzz-999 c1 100uf 50v cea (or ceanl,cssa, csza and so forth)
zzz-999 c2 20uf 65v ceanl

for each of the boards inside

and so forth, I or someone else can quickly get the actual replacement capacitor parts numbers (from mouser) rather quickly - the hard slow part is making that initial list of what's needed from the service manual.

I or mattsd and a few others are getting pretty good at the UPW / UKL / DSF / ECQ capacitor lists..

Here is my recap list for the SA-8500, including the known problem transistors, look it over Mark, and tell me what you think:

About $30.00 parts not including the Main Filter caps (about $5.00 ea) if you get the parts. . Labor probably 3-5 hours at the going rate for your area.

Just tried using Matt's BOM and 9 of 22 of the item queries are not available any longer. It's getting tough to do restorations anymore.

I will post up if I find suitable subs for those NLA.

Assume Nichicon lytics. If you will, post the 9 that are not available (thru Mouser). Maybe then a updated list can be made showings possible Panasonic or others.
