Pioneer SP-BS22-LR, the real deal or hype?

I see there is an Open Baffle project also.
Thanks poultrygeist.
Is a 300 watt amp needed? would a 100 watt suffice?
Im very novice at this and just wondering.
Im running tube main amps 35W and less into high eff. speakers.

A 300 watt plate amp is required for the 8" Dayton Reference and knock down kit shown here. Mounting the plate amp externally has many advantages besides not having to cut the enclosure. I'm so impressed with this combination I bought a second one.

A 100 watt plate amp is what I'd recommend for the Triska build.

Another lame question.
Which yeilds the better SQ, speaker in or line in?
Or do you just try each and listen? Probably.

When I'm not using the LFE sub out from an AV receiver I use one of the following connections:

source -> preamp ( two outputs ) -> one output to sub plate amp line in and one output to amp driving BS22's

source -> sub plate amp line in -> sub plate amp line out ( signal pass through ) -> amp -> BS22's

These connections are more practical when the plate amp is external and not mounted inside the sub.

I favor line level vs speaker level.

Ack! I usually buy from Amazon, but the price was so high I placed my first order with hhgregg on Friday. And hhg is having shipping problems with my order.

I'm just telling myself to be patient...

Finally grabbed a pair of 22s during the Amazon sale. I don't have an immediate need for them but $60/pair is a superb deal, so I will either find a use for them myself or give them to the next friend who needs speakers.

How will these compare B&W 686's (original version). Does anyone have experience with both?

Disregard, I just bought them*. At $59.90 how can you go wrong! I also picked up the SW-8MK2 sub (79.95). I almost bought the SP FS52 floorstanders (I hate integrating subs) which would have cost about the same as the BS 22's & Sub combined. Hope I made the right choice.

I'm curious to hear what all the fuss is about!

*Picked them up at Best Buy (price match).

Bump!
Just ordered a pair from newegg for 79.99 w/free shipping. I know they won't sound any worse than my old dbx satellites that's for sure! I was eyeballing the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's but don't have the cash at the moment and these looked like a decent deal. Small 12x12 room with a sub, I should do all right don't ya think?

My wife bought me a pair of these 22s for my birthday. Which was great because we need no speakers, but she knew I'd been wanting them just to play with and hear. So I've been listening to these instead of my Fortes for a few days now - and will continue to do so until the banana connectors I ordered arrive in a couple more days or so. Amazing speaker which I am using with my subwoofer, and it sounds great.

So Christine's laughing when she heard them, "You really didn't expect these to sound as good as our big ones, did you?" In her opinion they were obviously inferior to the Klipsch; attempts on my part to explain that I heard a couple things I thought the Pioneers do better than the Klipsch met only with doubt and scoffing. Further explanations that some people hate Klipsch and would actually prefer the little Pioneers also failed to be convincing to her, and she was totally convinced that such a claim had to be based on nothing other than sour grapes. She thinks we already have the epitome in quality sounding speakers in our living room, which is fantastic in my book because when we first got them (thanks again, Michael) she kept saying they were too big. And I love the Klipsch, too. They aren't going anywhere. That said, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Pioneer for the things they do well - a smooth frequency response, sparkly highs and good imaging - but look forward to getting those nanner plugs in and reconnecting the Klipsch.

For sale prices of less than a c-note and free shipping, I don't believe you can do better for new transducers.

Hal, they come with 5 way binding posts. Take a small knife and pry the plugs from the tops of the stock binding posts. Then you will be able to use speaker leads with banana plugs.

Hey guys newb here .
this might be apples to oranges but im really interested in these little pioneers.

but I also might have a good deal on some Allison Al 105s
is anyone familiar with them how would the two stand up against each other

im looking at $100 shipped for the pioneers or waiting tell they go on sale again :dunno: or about a hundred maybe less for the Allison

thanks for the help

Even though I never need another pair of speakers, New Egg had them on sale so yesterday morning I got a pair from Best Buy with a price match. I have a milestone Birthday coming up and decided to treat myself to a pair before they are no longer available.

These speakers are incredibly nice sounding and a steal at $79.99/pair. While I have many pairs of classic vintage speakers, this pair demonstrates that new speakers generally sound better than older comparable models.

They fill my largish living room without straining and offer smooth, non-fatiguing sound. Nevertheless, they are critical enough that the benefits from hooking them up to a better amp are readily apparent.

Strongly recommended.

bought 2 pair awhile back and really liked them, But after listening to them now for a fair amount of time i'm gunna hafta say that they are excellent 60$ a pair speaker. go much higher than that and the value is not so much. really lacking in the high dept. a good speaker to buy (at $60pr. tops) to test against, if you think your present speakers can't hold their own. of my two pair i'll keep one set and give the other to the daughter. a month ago i was only going to loan them to her.

ps i know that these are really intended for rear speakers so perhaps i'm being to picky.

Would love to read someone else's comparison between these and the new Dayton B652 Air's with the AMT tweets. I have them both as well as an opinion.
