I have a chance to get a Pioneer SX-1980 in very good working and cosmetic condition for $700.00

Is this a good deal?

Thanx,

yes, since on ebay they sell for double and triple in good condition. It's decent price, not a "score" price but anything under 1000 is good.

I might drive up and snag it. I figured I have around 6-bills into my sx-1250 after completely rebuilding it and I know this 1980 is the cream of the crop as far as the big Pioneers go. I have seen ratty ones for less but then again, my 1250 was a big POS when I got it.
$700 is a lot of dead presidents but maybe a wise investment even at that price.

Thanx!

There's more than a few folks I know that would call that a "HOLY CRAP" deal. Oh, missing a knob...... ya, jack him down some more on the price! Not. That's a good deal. :smoke:

Last local sale I know of, $1750 for a decent one that had been "cleaned up", knobs, etc... no "real" restoration.

I'd drop $700 for a working one in a heartbeat.

Was the seller "Mike" ?

Thought you had a line into a guy...find out from him if it is still available instead of wondering if the thousands of folks that wish they could get that deal that are on AK know the answer to a question you can ask by email, cl mail, phone or text.

And when you look it over, even with broke stuff on it, it can be a money maker or centerpiece for those that must have one.

I've always wondered why those things sell for that much. I know it's big and pretty powerful, but it seems you could get a much more powerful amp, and a very good preamp for even less.

Maybe I just don't understand.

That can be applied to a lot of "collectible" items. To answer your question it's because they are collectible.

The SX-1980 was what every pimply faced teenager and poor college student/grad drooled over at the stereo store. Now that these folks are at the height of their earning power, they can afford what they always wanted. And why not? You only live once.
