Headphones Hiss:
Background Info: Previously when testing with headphones, there was a prominent background hiss that got louder with the volume knob. No other controls changed it. I have thoroughly deoxited the headphone jack. It was not at all noticeable with speakers.
I understand that, unfortunately, headphones bring out every flaw imaginable, but I am aiming to reduce this hiss as much as possible to be able to use headphones with this unit daily.
After the Power Supply ReCap: I tested it with headphones, and the background hiss was largely reduced. It is not very noticeable most of the time, but it is still there though, and I would like to reduce it further if possible. It still does not change with any other controls like the Tone, or Loudness Circuits. It DOES behave differently now with volume knob changes, however. Now it starts to get louder as I increase the volume, but then the hiss will go back to its 'normal' level as I keep increasing the volume level, as if the current is being normalized. I am guessing that it is the Power Amp Transistors that are balancing out the levels? On the Power Amp Board, Q5, Q6, Q7, and Q8 ALL have black legs. Q3 & Q4 do not. Q1 and Q2 also have black legs, but I have read that people usually leave these alone, as these can be a royal PITA to replace because I would have to find matching pairs of transistors, etc, etc.
I still have other things to ReCap on this unit, but right now I have the Power Amp Heat Sink out of the unit, and I am wondering if I should go ahead and start replacing some Transistors on the Power Amp while its apart, (which ones, all of them?), OR should I finish the ReCap of the unit first, then see where Im at with that Headphone Hiss?
