Pioneer SX-939 or SX-1250

Just need an opinion on which of these would be the better deal.
A Pioneer SX-1250 for $500 or a Pioneer SX-939 for $225. Both are in excellent condition both operationally and cosmetically.

Neither. Too spendy for both, IMO.

Yeah I've been looking for a couple of months for a powerful beast from the 70's from either Pioneer, Sansui or Marantz. And it seems these prices are what everyone is asking for recievers in this class in excellent condition. As for those thrift store gems that everyone talks about on this site, they don't seem to exist in my area.

The 939's seem very popular for good reason. They are a nice sounding receiver but you could find a SX-1010 for the same price if you keep looking.

That's about the going rate for a SX-1250 if it's in nice condition. You might be able to find one cheaper but it will probably take a while.

Sound wise the earlier Pioneer's are a little more colored and people say they have a more tube like sound. The later 50's series are more neutral sounding and will be more revealing of your source and speakers.

Unless you crank your music the 1250 might be overkill for you.

sx-1250

$500 for an sx-1250 in good nick if certainly fair.

Not sure how common they are where you are but in my neck of the woods they are relatively scarce, so $500 would not bother me at all.

I have three (well, one I gave to my eldest daughter) and in excellent shape and my average price was about $550 .... and not sure that I would sell one for that.

So, what to buy depends upon your budget, but the 1250 for sure you can always move it on....

Right now I am using the SX-828 with Dynaco A-25's and I have to run the volume around 12 noon and that still isn't quite loud enough. I prefer the volume around 1 or 2 oclock but don't like running my receiver that hot. When I had my Sansui SP100's hooked up to the SX-828 I could run it betwen 10 and 11 oclock for a nice loud volume. But I know the Sansui's were way more efficient than the Dynaco's. Problem is that the Dynaco's sound 100 times better and I'd rather listen to a more pleasing sound even if its a lower volume. So I guess, yeah I like the music fairly loud. I'm looking for an amp a bit more powerful than my SX-828 and speakers that are similar to the Dynaco's in musicality but a little more efficient.

If that's the case pick up the 1250 and give it a try. If you don't like it sound wise you can easily flip it without loosing little if any money. It should easily have enough power for most speakers out there.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking. And it should provide enough clean power to my Dynaco's to turn them up a bit more, until I find replacement speakers.

I've had quite a few 1250's. Had a couple for spares but sold one to a friend and the other on CL because I felt I didn't need to keep them around.

The one I kept is an Echowars special which I will never sell. I like it that much.
