planning DIY SE KT88 build

For the best tube glow, mount the power tube and rectifier sockets with the screws at 12:00 & 6:00 (as viewed from the front of the amp). I think the preamp tube is the same. but it is rather small, so this may not matter too much. Actually, you might find (like I did) that it's really not that big of a deal. I mounted mine opposite of the above because I thought that screws at 3 & 9 o'clock would look better and I thought that it gave a little better layout for wiring when I was creating my wiring diagram in ACAD.

Another thing you want to think about (which I DIDN'T) is, do you want the "Edcor" logo facing out on your OPT? Again, I designed my layout for best wiring symmetry and when I finished, I realized that only my PT had the bell facing outward, but it was hidden by the 10H choke. So, couldn't see the "edcor" logo on any of the xfmrs. But I actually got used to that and kind of liked it. Your call.

2 caps on top are multi-section electrolytic filter caps. ( I used JJ and then F&T.....only changed out cause I thought I had damaged the JJs....both are fine...choose your color....the F&T blue matches Edcor blue pretty well, but black is cool too). I'd say you are fine using all electrolytic in the PS. I think the two 10uF right before the driver tube are typically film because they are a little cheaper than lytics (they are the black Solens at the bottom of the pic below.

The two yellow caps are the coupling caps. They are Kimber, which I changed out for Jantzen superior. I'd recommend the Jantzen.
Also, the safety cap (yellow) by the F&T filter caps isn't actually an X2 type safety cap. It also was replaced by the proper cap after this photo was taken.
the bottom isn't perfectly symmetrical, but I highly recommend taking the time to do neat and tidy wiring. use 90 deg bends when possible. It looks much better and will reduce any possible hum.
Avoid crossing wires if you can.
Another thing that I wasn't too pleased with is how cramped the amp section was on mine. I should have spread the power tubes a little farther apart, but I thought it hurt the appearance top-side.
It is a pain to reach the solder lugs on the sockets the way I laid it out.
There are cathode bias resistors on the bottom side ( or "top" actually) of that tag board to save space.

You can also save a bit of time if you don't need a volume pot ( I ended up removing mine cause I built a preamp soon after the power amp).

Also, I would leave out the UL/Triode switch and decide whether you need the power of UL mode, or would rather just have triode mode. I used Triode mode the most. I think, to me, it sounded a little sweeter. But if you are a rocker, then definitely do UL mode. I just found that I didn't switch back and forth between modes.

More pics here on my BT thread. I miss it. I'll probably build another one later this year. EL84/6BQ5 amps just don't have the same magic.

Thanks a ton for the info and pics!! I plan on using cheap couplers at first on purpose. I hope to do the layout in such a way that they are easily swapped out so I'll get a chance to actually hear the difference. Will build with the volume control at first as I plan to plug a phono pre directly in. Will likely build a preamp in the future and bypass it.

I s'pose the nice thing about the Edcor wait time is that I have plenty of time to work up a good layout. Fired up my old school cad-cam program (aka Pencil and Paper).

Thanks again!! More questions to come I'm sure.

And here come the questions....

What value are your cap cans? I'm guessing 16u/16u (using only one half) before the choke and 50u/50u (tied together for 100u) after the choke ?? I was planning on using radials inside but like the look of the cans....

I see what looks like a resistor across the volume pot??

Are you using grid resistors on the power tubes? Pic looks like: coupling cap, grid resistor, grid/470k to ground. Is that correct? What value grid resistor?

And last (for now)... One ground point only ? By the cap cans??

Thanks!

PM me with your email and I'll get you the schematic I used. It will answer all of your questions except for one.
Yes, I used a star ground method, so all grounds go to one point (signal ground) and then to chassis through a 10ohm 5watt resistor in parallel with a safety cap.

Thanks for the email!! Starting to make sense of it all...

2 more questions...

What type of "safety" cap do I need? X or Y rated? .1u/400v ?

IEC filter modules.... Is there any rule(s) for choosing these? Mostly looking at the amp rating. I did some searching and read that you want to keep the amp rating close to the current draw of the amp. Was thinking a 3A filter should be fine... ??

Happy 4th !!! ;)

Well, I'm done. :music:

These Jantzen Superior Z caps are the cat's pajamas! I have 2 way horn speakers & now when I listen to a saxophone, it sounds like the horn IS the saxophone. It just couldn't be much more realistic.

Another big difference is the intimacy & realism of brushes on a snare drum. I couldn't believe how "iin the room" it sounded. On one song, the snare sounded like it was sitting in the place of my left speaker...but then the sax came in and was hovering in the middle of the room. wow.

Familiar songs truly sound new because there is so much information that I never noticed before.

Sound stage didn't seem to be wider, but deeper. Most of the music I have listened to has been small jazz groups, so the venues or studios are smaller.
Some Beach Boys tunes had that nice reverb or concert hall effect though.

I don't think the .33uF vs. .22uF had any noticeable difference, but Superior Z are definitely superior to KimberKaps. And for $5 more per cap, they are pretty much 150% to 200% the sound quality of the KimberKap.

I read one review of the superior Z that said the mids are "dry", but I didn't find them to be. Midrange is really smooth and musical. I used to not care for mid-range and EQ'd my system to drop it. After I built my KT88 power amp, I realized that it sounded a tad forward, but more delicate and detailed without tone controls. My ears grew accustomed to the sound, so I designed my preamp without controls too. But now, these caps absolutely erased any thought of needing tone controls. Every frequency band is enjoyable and well balanced.

They sounded congested and peaky for the first hour, but after about 2-4 hours they were broken in. I have about 10 hours on them now.

Best $25 I've spent on mods.

My SE EL34 is actually based on the JELabs version, and I designed my own power supply, but it's very similar to the Abdellah circuit. Built mine about ten years ago and had NOS RCA 6CA7's most of those years, with MANY hours of play time daily. I started out with .22 Auricaps. Just about two weeks ago ordered, received and installed the Jantzen Superior Z's. I was hoping to be able to at least hear SOME kind of improvement. I didn't expect what I got; they completely transformed the amp. Absolutely blew me away, and the more I listen, the more they're opening up. Super glad I did that. Next up, should have my EH KT88's tomorrow. Also, I've run it in triode for the last ten years, forgot that I'd ordered my Edcors with the UL tap, which I just hooked up last week to see how it sounds. Sounds pretty dang good, so I guess I'll be wiring in a switch tomorrow while I wait for the mailman. BTW, tried varying levels of NFB with the UL and didn't like it whatsoever. Sounds fantastic, but different than triode, with zero feedback. All my opinion obviously. Enjoy folks! Listen on!

Of all the things to just be laying around my bench... .01u 275vac x2 safety cap. Guess I'm good! Thanks!

Layout is moving along.

You guys are killing me with the Jantzen Z caps!!! Was planning on starting with some Mallory 150s (cuz I have them) then maybe some Kimbers or Auricaps so I could hear the difference. What value are you guys using? .22u ? .33u ? Where are they available? I see parts express but any other options?

Chassis and most parts should be here Thursday. Guess it's time to order a turntable and find some speakers.;)IMG_2815.JPG IMG_2816.JPG

Oh, I wasnt trying to talk you into anything. Just agreeing with Mr Salinger that they do sound fantastic. You could use orange drops, cheapo IC, the brown MPP or even the Auricaps you spoke of, which is exactly what I had in for all this time, and it'd sound just great. Parts Express has some stuff, Madisound, Mouser, Angela instruments. Just google tube amp coupling caps. Good luck! Can't wait to see how you do!

Turns out I needed some stuff for work from Parts Express. Jantzen Z's on the way. ;)

If only I had some transformers. And a turntable. And speakers.

I'm waiting on my transformers now. Everything else has arrived. I've done some looking on the web and I've only found one or two of these where the layout was visually symmetrical. To my eye I would like to see the power supply in the middle and the drivers/finals on the left and right. Has anyone done this or have they had success with a layout in this format?

Thanks!

I agree with you on the aesthetics of a symmetrical layout, it just seems more pleasing to my eye. I'm not an amp designer but I imagine if your careful with the signal wire layout (low level) that it can work out fine.

I imagine depending upon the size of the installation surface that transformer orientation will present the greatest challenge. With my parts selection I'll have 2 output xformers, 1 power transformer and one choke. Other than the tubes, all else will be inside the chassis. When the transformers get here I'll have to do some hum rejection/isolation testing. I was hoping someone had already tackled this.

As I recall, Tom McNally builds some amps with the layout you suggest Punkin. Now, I am not affiliated in any way with him, nor have I ever purchased anything from him, but he seems like a good guy. I'm not sure what the rule is regarding advertising so I won't post a link, but a quick search for tom McNally amps will turn his website up quickly. He also does answer questions via email.
I'm pretty partial to my layout, with the power supply to the right, tubes staggered so they are all clearly visible, and opt's behind the power tubes. Anyway, my two cents. Good luck!

I'm with you, RUmad. I prefer the look of PS on one side vs. symmetrical.

Symmetrical says "China" to me.

Besides that, it puts some distance between the noisy power and the input. Form follows function.

Thanks for that tip. Please don't misunderstand. I do like the looks of the supply to one side and audio section to the other but I just wanted to do something a little less common. Besides I've got a little "thing" with symmetry. I can spot a crooked line a mile away  . Again, thanks or the tip. I'll see if I can't contact Mr. McNally.

I really like symmetry too but decided to just follow what others have done. Ready to fire up the soldering iron - just need transformers...

Found a Kenwood KD-5070 turntable and a Kenwood C-2 preamp. Should have them both before the transformers. Now just need to find speakers...
