Platter Mats?

Would my Technics SL1600 that has no VTA benefit from a
Funk Firm Achromat 3mm (for Turntables with arms with no VTA Adjustment)?

Yes if the thickness is correct to get SRA correct. I would try something cheaper that's 3mm thick,

Mats have an effect on sound. Won't know which is best without trying em. Depends on the TT which us best

Herbies way excellent sounds great on a TD-160.

I have tried a few different mats , herbies, felt, rubber. The Funk Achromat is the absolute best sounding . I have tried it on several different tables , same result.
