Playstation 1 CD Player?

celticguitar

Too Loud? Oh Well
I know this probably old news here but I was wondering how many out there are using original PS1 as a Cd player.:scratch2: I heard about this a while ago in Stereophile and there was a recent right up and review in same mag. The critical analysis was not great except for very good channel seperation low jitter and excellent errror rejection. It was rated at 14 bit but the conclusion was it was a very smooth player with a great sound. The draw back was the using the controler to navagate but it was neatly explained how it worked without hooking it up to a TV real simple but there was the cord to controller. Well I tried my son's PS2 wireless remote and it worked fine so there you have a remote with no wire. The sound was indeed very smooth and solid good detail clear better than my Sony CD player and no skipping! My Sony skips at high volumes and when the kids jump around in room even with isolaters and dampers under it but not so with the PS1. So I wonder I think maybe because it retreives the info so well from the CD that explains the sound? Even high end owners use it.

I have one that I swear by. It's in daily use in my main system. I've never owned a real "high end" cd player but I know the PS1 blows the doors off of any of the other run of of mill cd players and dvd players that I've tried.

the superior skip resistance is most likely attributed to the fact that the disc snaps solidly onto the drive spindle. the PS1 being a top loader and all. the first edition PS1 is a superb gaming deck, i have used one from the mid 1990's until the early 2000s when i got a PS2 (much more stylish) i don't doubt that it's a perfectly good CDP, but i just don't see it fitting well into a Hi-Fi system and replacing a true CDP like this one...

boy, youll use any excuse to squeeze a pic of your denon 1500 in, wont you

i kid i kid :D

Outlaw I did do a search and a bunch of threads did come up but not one was named playstation in the title that I could find. I didn't want to pour threw all of them to find it so I started this one.
This I knew was old news but relatively new to me just a couple of months. If anybody is interested the issue of Stereophile is the july 2008 that has complete review from what I understand quite a few people have it as part of their high end system. I got mine for free and it's 1001 model which is suppose to be the best of the bunch. I have it hooked with a pair of cheapy RCA cables a good set of cables is really suppose to flesh it out. I am running it through a Caver field amp with A/D/S speakers with a 300 watt A/D/S sub woofer.

try searching "PS1" "PlayStation One"/1 and so on...

In my testing, the only PSX's with good CD player sound are the ones with RCA jacks built in. The ones with only the multi AV out have a "hummmmmmmmmm" sound in them, and are not very loud..

Now, my Sega CD (old tray loader) as a CD player, it's a nice 16-bit 44.1KHz DAC, straight up with 8x oversampling.. sounds wonderful. sounds good when used with a model 1 Genesis without the mixing cable attached. This removes all Genesis sound from the Sega CD's RCA jacks.

I own the good PS1, the one you don't have to turn upside down and the one with the RCA jacks. Mine plays CD's real well 'cept I have a 2inch thick pad under it so it don't skip when I up the volume. It is currently being used as the main player in my recording studio with the video jack connected to an old commodore 64 monitor (remember those?) to see the display. My friend owned the one you had to turn upside down. Never understood that!

I've been using one for 3 month's solid. I intend to find a good deal on a CDP over time, but until then, I have good tunes! Using the controller without a TV does take some getting used to, though. Also, when you first turn on the PS1, make sure the receiver volume is muted/amplifier turned down - the bass is very strong as the system boots!

Lady I tried all those too but no results so here we have a new thread because I couldn't find a thread using those parameters

I have the PS-1 with rca jacks. I would call it a decent cd player not great by any means. I only have the PS-1 controller which only gives you some basic functions with it. Stop/Start/Next/Previous.

Wireless remote for PS1

Slow Jazz
I tried my sons PS2 wireless remote with the ps1 and it works great. I picked his up at believe it or not Toy'sR us but you can get one for cheap money at Wal mart so you don't have the hassle of the cord just like a regular CD player.
My wife is a pretty critical listener and she felt the sound was quite good. She is a schooled violinist with a great ear. It is more emphasized in the mids with a slight roll off of the bass and treble but considering how most CD's are way too bright and Bass heavy it mellows and smoothes out the sound especially on older CD's of remastered music. I have to do more side by side comparisons until I am completely sold but so far so good.

Well, I picked up a PS1 at a flea market to try this out before I realized I was supposed to get the one with the RCA jacks. Safe to say that the one without the RCA outputs is at best a mediocre CD player. Better than my mid-80's Sony, worse than my AMC and Samsung DVD player, worse than my 2001 Sony CD player/burner. To my ears, anyway. So...careful which one you buy to check this out. Read before you spend (I'm only out $15 and have a gaming system again that I donated to SA almost a decade ago.)
