I am pretty sure every photographer has a little pile of photos that resonate with them in some special, inexplicable way. Not just in the normal "favorites" kind of way, but something more profound. Such is the case with this photo. I took it in 2011 on camping trip in the rain in Mendocino county, CA. I had only brought my tiny and trusty Olympus Stylus camera. Single car, lonely road, late in the day, drizzling rain.

A couple months ago, I was switching from Win to Linux, and from Adobe Lightroom - my editor for about 15 years - to some Linux editor. In the process of copying and backing up and all that, I lost this and a few other important pics. I dunno how - digital decay or something. I was horrified and so disappointed. I had shown this photo in shows, but years ago when moving I sold that framed print. I could stilll see the entire photo in my mind, but that wasn't good enough. A few days ago, rummaging through some stuff in the closet, I found a hard drive: "Lightroom Full Backup - 2024." Ahhhhhhhhh......

Curious deer while hiking in the Adirondacks.

View of Mt Arab Lake from the fire tower on Mt Arab. A short 1 mile hike similar in length to Bald Mt that the grandkids like to do.

I always thought Mt Arab was a strange name for the Adirondacks. It turns out it was a poor translation of the French word for maple "erable" due to the heavy maple tree growth on the mountain. Over time, "Mont Erable" became "Mount Arab " in old guidebooks

Very nice. The state parks are the thing I miss most from when I lived in that area.

Thank you for your comment. I saw your post when we were camping in the Adirondacks and meant to respond but with spotty service I forgot. Yes, we do appreciate the many state parks in NY. I believe there are over 180 state parks in NY. Many of the parks in the Finger Lakes Region have gorges with numerous waterfalls similar to Watkins Glen. Of course the biggest park is our favorite, the Adirondack Park with over 6 million acres.
