Food for thought (for everyone - I'm not singling Bill Ferris out):When I received my house`s lightning strike in 1997, I was using a dedicated (separate from the original land line) dialup land line feeding my expensive because of the high amount of memory for that era
Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) despite the advice given on YouTube (by various parties I will not name) need to be Code Compliant (see NFPA 780), need to be designed by a Certified LPS Designer, need to have UL components (UL 96), and need to have side-arc flash protection (where required IEE 142, NFPA 77, UL 467) and bonding to a counterpoise. IBC do not require LPS but NFPA does IF (a big IF) your structure happens to be out of the "shadow" or "sphere" of a lightning occurrence.
A common prescriptive rule would be that if you live in a building beside a taller building, the taller building is more susceptible to a lightning strike. Same case if you live within a forest/woods with tall trees. Only a Lightning Risk Assessment can determine that (ref: "The lightning risk assessment should take into account parameters associated with the structure and its surrounds, the lightning flash density of the location, and the importance of the facility and its processes to the business, the community, and the environment.")
Bill: How come you decided to mitigate future lightning strikes when everyone knows that lightning does not strike twice in the same place?
But I'm glad you have taken mitigating measures rather than see valuable equipment/house becoming toast.
