Speaking of Deuces, do the GL's have as much bass as the winged "C's" ?

I run Ruby KT88s in my Latino ST120, after I talked with Craig at NOS Valves about tubes, he convinced me to spend the extra cash on the tubes for the pre-amp section of my amp, NOS Mullards and NOS Telefunken.
As Craig explained it to me, you will realize more of a sonic difference with the better tubes in the pre-section. He said the KT88s push out the power and don't do a lot sonicly.
I took his word for it and can honestly say I'm very pleased.

Similar power ratings, but somewhat different methods of getting there. The 6550 is a beam pentode like the 6L6. The KT-88 is a kinkless tetrode.

From what I understand the 6550 was designed for industrial applications (hence the four-digit number), the KT88 was designed solely for audio work.

I've got KT-88s but never walked in on 'em......hope they're well behaved when I'm out.

I would highly recommend the GL's or a pair of EH KT90's. The KT90's are quite a bit cheaper, and may even possibly edge out my GL's. I bought mine through Jim McShane, which were slightly more, but I am comfortable with what I received on both accounts. McShane has no problem answering your questions and/or steering you in the right direction regardless if he stands to make or lose money. He will and does stand behind his products. I tried the EH and then tried the GL. I heard a difference, but not a dramatic one. The EH are a good bang for the buck.

It's just what they are. You're more than welcome to use a Ouija board to contact the Genalex engineer who came up with the terminology 60+ years ago. I think it had something to do with there not being a "kink" in the frequency response curve found on the early prototype tetrodes.
