Recently acquired Proton D1200 Amp and 1100 Pre-Amp.

Nice looking amp with big meters and green lighting. To bad the pre-amp is so plain looking.

Keep in mind that the D1200 is one of the most powerful amplifiers of it's time (and easily one of the top 10 most powerful home amplifiers sold). The DPD circuit means business and that amp has in excess of 7 dB of headroom PER CHANNEL.

I've had several of them and used them to power large subwoofer systems in my home theater systems. A single D1200 trumped (and easily) a McIntosh MC2500 in that duty. Later, I ran a pair of D1200s on my woofers, each at 4 Ohms per channel. Only a Crown MicroTech 2400 could best that.

Have fun.

I always had the curiosity, will these modern power amps work with pre amps from the 70's, 80's and 90's?

I have two of these, the first I purchased in the mid 80's from Crutchfield the 2nd off fleabay... I'm running them as mono blocks.
The pre-amp may be plain, but it's quiet and has options for MM/MC and cart loading.

I've enjoyed many trouble free years with mine! Enjoy!

Early model D1200s could in fact be bridged. Later models do not have this feature. If these amps had a shortcoming, it would be the mounting of the RCA connectors. If only they were solidly mounted to the chassis.

Buttercup - what you got your pair bridged to?

I already have plenty of amps and pre-amps that I really didn't need these but I just could not resist those big green meters and the fact that both units are fully operational and work fine.

Now I just need to decide what to do with them. Hummmmmm.......

OH, and if you want those meters to be bright, you can use these lamps in lieu of the factory ones: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/25-080

You have to open up the lamp holders slightly to fit these (super easy) as they're longer than the stock bulbs but the difference in intensity is night and day.

Thanks for the info about the brighter lights. I like the stock ones but I might just try the bright ones to see which I like better.

If these amps had a shortcoming, it would be the mounting of the RCA connectors. If only they were solidly mounted to the chassis.

I have an AV300 receiver here that suffers from poorly mounted RCA connectors as well. One input on it got shoved in and now the connector just wobbles in place (yet still works).
