Punched a hole through my Cheviot cone is there any hope?

IF they sound good to you and your going to keep them for personal use and happy with the sound that's all that matters..
But yes i agree they did a hasty job that you could have done better just takes a little thinking out.

it would create miss matched speakers so doing one would be my last resort, i mentioned earlier in the post that i found a pair of OEM cone kits for $600 but that is a bit more then i want to put into these right now, if the price comes down or i can convince myself that i really need them i might go for it as they come with voice coils so i wouldnt have to worry about those going bad as well. but its hard to justify putting in to them double what i paid for the speakers.

It appears their utility value is fully intact. If that's ok with you, let their next custodian worry about the cosmetic aspect and enjoy using them.

If the difference in resale is sufficient to make them investments, then maybe nailing down a matched set to get that value advantage might be prudent.

He's going to keep them and enjoy listening to them, he did pay for badges and stuff after the grill cover is on who cares.
His cone is not completely trashed but they did a piss poor job of an attempt to make it look like they are experienced pros.
I would put a sheet of thin material on the back side in case the what appears to be white glue dries and splits along the separation points.
Honestly a ply of toilet paper is as thin as it gets and it works when you impregnate it with adhesive, use a small artist paint brush.

Coffee filter paper is stronger and very lightweight.. I use it for patching and never had one fail as of yet. I would do like you say, add a small reinforcement (of your choice) to the back to be sure the cracks/tears won't come apart, and enjoy the music.

If it is the "same" cone, why would it be a "miss-match" (other than the "new look")? But as long as yours works, and holds up, put the grills on and enjoy the music. Sometimes the "value" is a "show stopper". Either way, we're glad you have music again.

Just assumed a 40 year old cone and voice coil would sound a bit different then an unused one. I don't really know that much about it

Perhaps we are overthinking a conservative adequate repair. Anything further is going to increase mass at the damaged area and likely be irreversable if a misstep or unnecessary at the least. If it is adequate and durable as-is and not broke, -----.

If it is the same coil as in the same wire, and the same amount of turns, it will sound no different. A voice coil doesn't normally "wear out" or change. It stays the same. If the paper cone is the same weight, thickness, density, etc as the original (which I am assuming it is), and the same dust cap, there will be a small difference when first installed until it is "broken in". After that it will sound the same, or extremely close. The parts that flex, the surround and spider, will be a bit stiffer until they are flexed a while and loosen up.

so i found a used cone on ebay for $125 and ordered in case i ever wanted to replace the torn one but it wasnt packed good and got bent now its got a crease and dust cap popped off now its oval instead of round seller is refunding but what a waste he just put it in a single wall box with peanuts.

Can't see your images, but I can easily imagine what it looks like. So many FleaBay sellers (and other people too) have absolutely no common sense when it comes to packing/shipping delicate items, or heavy items. I absolutely hate opening a package and seeing peanuts! Peanuts just shuffle around and the item "settles" out to the bottom or sides leaving no protection whatsoever. With heavy items, they just crush into nothing. Then there's the mess they leave.. So many times I thought "they should outlaw these damned things!" lol!

yes despite the appearance it feels like a very solid repair and i have not heard any degradation in the sound at least to my ears. i just wonder if it will hold up over time without some sort of material there

One of my Infinty IMG drivers had a hole punched in it, luckily the black cone matched well with black fingernail polish. The driver held up for many yrs without any backing material, just recently replaced both but still have the others on hand just in case.

Here are pics of the repair, absolutely no ill affects to the SQ. The small crack in the front actually went the whole distance as evidenced from the rear, the hole punched through just the dust cap but it's integral to the cone.

Again, the repair might not look perfect but it held for many yrs, this is the mid/bass driver out of my Modulus mains.

the seller refunded me and said i could keep the cone, i tried to straighten it and ive got it back to pretty round now but it still has 3 creases in it but if the punctured one ever pops open and gets worse i can probably get this one to work. it will still not look great but if i ever want to sell creases may look better than the puncture repair. very disappointing though as i thought i found a reasonable priced way to get this looking good again
