Quality Portable Shortwave Radio

Can anyone give me some ideas on a good portable shortwave radio?

My wife wants one for X-mas.

I have a Sony ICF-2010. It is a world all band from 150 KHz to 29.999MHz. Digital tuning. wide-narrow IF, USB/LSB and Synchronous detector. Programmable sweep/scan mode and also stop on station search mode. FM broadcast band and AM VHF aircraft band also. Sleep timer. Awesome radio with a very good rep with DX'ers. Discontinued some years ago. You may find one on ebay. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Radio Shack discontinued their portables earlier this year, I beleive. You may be able to find some left over at your local Radio Shack stores and get a good deal.

grundig's are not too bad. i've had a YB-400 (bought new from universal radio) for about 6 years serving double duty as a bedside radio. great reciever, although i think it finally needs a tune up (stations drop out occasionally).

you can skimp on the SSB etc if you're not interested in listening in on amateur broadcasts etc, and save some money in the process.

from what i hear, the sony's are slightly more sensitve (my dad had a sony, and we used that piece for a good 12 years (needed maintenance once or twice) till it fell out of my bag at college), ... but the grundig's are are a bit better sounding .... (warm sounding).

FWIW, the Sony SW35 is a good little unit for the money. It has reasonably complete coverage, the signal pick-up is good. The only gripe I have with it is that the speaker could be a bit bigger.
