Rare Holy Grail Frazier Model Elevens

I can honestly say with no reservation that these Model Elevens have the deepest bass I have ever heard from a speaker. It's interesting since the EV 15" is supposed to only go down to 50hz, and the 12" woofer is crossed at 400hz handling the low end only. It must be the size of the cabinet, and the ports that help get the bass down so low.

They look big, and that was a great price but.......how do they sound?

Until I get all my connections finished I will keep them on the dollies, until they are on the ground I can't really give a fair assessment. But playing Floyd's DSOTM album, and using my Fisher tube receiver I was pretty blown away. They really fill the whole house with sound like no other speaker I have owned. The one thing I have noticed is that they respond to the quality of the track being played more than most speakers. Bad tracks really sound bad, good tracks sound amazing. For example, Dire Straits was mind blowingly good, AC/DC was horrible. Still a lot of testing to be done though. I also notice that the risers have metal sliders on them, not good for the floor at all so those will get changed to something like plastic or felt.

DS records very well indeed. To me, "Love Over Gold" sounds incredibly well recorded.

From the mouths of former Frazier speaker employees, Jack Frazier was after a very flat response in his designs. So far these 11's are very finicky, tracks with monster bass built in, are just thunderous! I like bass, but it needs to be accurate sounding, not over the top colored. Tracks that are lacking bass sound extra top end heavy, so I just need to figure out which amp I have gives the best all around balance. Bi amping or tri amping these 11's would probably give you the best outcome, but capacitors, and binding posts are the only mods I want to do to these.

I don't think looking for amps is a solution to bad mastering. Some recordings are going to sound like crap unless you can reduce compression and correct frequency deficiencies. In this case a dynamic processor or an EQ would give you better results for bad recordings. An amp only reproduces the signal the preamp sends it. Better amps and preamps just highlight the deficiencies of a bad recording, no amp can help that. It just reproduces what it's fed

It gives me reason to have many amps, receivers, and preamps, don't spoil it for me.

I'm going to pull out the db meter next and see what these speakers are putting out a different volume settings.

Everyone loves a parade. No raining on parades! :D

My meter was showing around 89db while playing Money For Nothing from DS. :music: That was plenty loud enough for me. :D

It sounds like your speakers are very source revealing . Is that a bad thing ? :scratch2:

I would get some great recordings and enjoy . Flim and the BB's come to mind if you like jazz . On CD of course .

Revealing is the word, these speakers reveal every detail of the recording.

I listened to a few live recordings last night from Little Feat, and Clapton, it was like I was part of the crowd.

Put an EQ on them and just switch it out of the loop unless you really need it. And buy all the amps you want, we're mostly a bunch of enablers. :D

Re: feet, hard plastic ones are OK for wood floors. Felt does not do well if the object is heavy, it will catch on something and tear off. I suggest the hard plastic ones with bolt threads rather than a nail point. There's term for them that makes searching easier, let me know if you need it and I'll look it up. I had to find some recently for a heavy guitar amp cabinet. For the 'socket' you use a 'threaded insert' which screws into the wood and has internal threads to accept the bolt.

Great, thanks for the suggestions.

Did you see the actual assembly drawing for the crossover I posted? I was hoping you could make sense of it and we could draw a good schematic.

I've been meaning to get back to that, yes I looked at it and it's basically what I drew out from your earlier wiring diagram. And it's hinky as heck! Drawing a schematic in 'traditional' xover format is fairly hopeless, it's got more kinks than a garden hose. I'll get back to that when I can.

:D

We may have one or two people here who don't have stacks of gear. Possibly.

It is supposed to be two crossovers in paralell.

That could only mean that they spread their gear out in a horizontal fashion...

i use hockey pucks...

I recently moved back to Alabama and in our shop, we found that we have two of them. Number 14, and 15. However, the previous owner painted them black, and looks like the 15" on 14 (I think) is fixed with a sealant. :thumbsdn: Everything else about them is amazing though, the covers are still in perfect condition, and they work like a charm.

Still cool to know there's a rare piece just sitting there. :thmbsp::smoke:

I'll post pics of them later.
