Realistic Minimus 7 ID Thread

So I put the Lafayette Pip Speak SD14 tweeters in a pair of Minimus 7s and did a short test along side a pair of 7s with the SD13s. No notable difference I could tell.

Next I’m gonna put the MiniSpeaks up against a pair of 7s with the SD50 and SD60 tweeters.

The original surrounds probably disintegrated, and the original owner replaced them rather than refoam or toss them.

At least your replacement woofer is OEM. The SD60 tweeter is a typical later, cheaper version with a plastic mounting plate and rings circling the dome. You would improve the sound by switching to SD50 or, even better, SD13s.
 
I just picked up a Teac Variation of these "TEAC LS-X7" and they have 1218 Woofers / SD-13 drivers.
I have a set of Walnuts I wanna try the big crossover mod but for these im just going to swap the 1 cap
for a newer one with the same spec, I also have dynamatt to line the interior which I hear helps.

That’s a very nice pair of Realistic rebadges with the desirable tweeter.

SD-7x series tweeters are found in Optimus (and RCA) versions of the Minimus-7 legacy.
PRO-7 (ported version) -- SD-71
PRO-7AV (shielded version) -- SD-70
PRO-X44AV (ported & shielded) -- SD-77

Minimus-77 -- "big brother" to Minimus-7 with its 5" woofer -- has an SD-61 tweeter.
Corresponding Optimus/RCA version tweeters include:
PRO-77 (ported) --- SD-72
PRO-X55AV (ported & shielded) -- SD-79

I suspect, but haven't verified, that tweeters on big brothers have a taller mounting plate similar to Minimus-7W tweeters. If so, they won't fit on die-cast models having 4' woofers (and possibly not an exact fit to 7W either).
[Edit: Have verified that Minimus-77 tweeter mounting plate size matches Minimus-7W: 4" x 2-13/16" (10.2cm x 7.1cm). Tweeter plates in die-cast Minimus-7 are 4" x 2½"]

Chronological list of Minimus-7 tweeters that I'm aware of are:

I knew there were more out there.

I have experienced all 3 versions in the Minimus 7 and the SD -13 is by far the better tweeter.

Wow! We got a wealth of information from this one question.

I looked on ebay and it looks like a pair of woofers will cost a pretty penny about $30 each. I guess I should part my pair with blown woofers. It seems the tweeters, grills and boxes will bring a sweet price.

On the subject of Minimus 7 Tweeters, are there any actual differences between the physical tweeter units between the SD-13 [aluminum mounting plate] and the SD-50 [steel mounting plate. I have both and actual tweeters look the same.
People here are always commenting how SD-13 sound the best but is it just a characteristic of the different mounting plate material?

I recently put some SD-59 tweeters from a pair of Minimus 7 Walnuts with plastic mounting plates on a SD-13 mounting plate and they sound great.

Hope it's not a faux pas to resurrect this, but I have just had the M7 find of a lifetime and could use an opinion.

Minimus 7Ws, original 40-2039, with date code 6A2 and serial numbers 20081 and 20088.

Subsequent Minimus 7s had serial numbers starting from zero. I have a pair of 4039A's from June of '84 with serial numbers in the late 700s. The date code would suggest these are very early 7Ws, as they were new for the 83 catalog and the consensus here is they showed up in stores the fall of 82. The 6A2 date code would be manufactured June of 82, and giving them a month in the supply chain and container shipping, arriving here in stores in July or August of 82.

So, here's my questions:
  1. On the earliest runs did they start with serial number 20,000? This was a common practice for new items, but it then raises the quetion...
  2. Have I then found #81 and #88 off the original 7W production run?

Interesting questions. While researching Minimus-7 chronology I've logged nearly 250 examples of the Walnut version from images that offer discernible data (now including your pair -- thanks!). This is quite a small sample compared to data found for die-cast models.

For 1st issue, non-suffix 7W, I've logged merely 5 pair and a single. Data for this specific model has been scarce.

The above indicates model production began at least as early as May of '82 with serial numbers less than 20,000. This steady progression to higher numbers through 1982 that abruptly drop in 1983 might, on its face, suggest serial numbers were reset yearly. But if that were true, we would expect a count well past 900's near the end of '83.

It's my thought that apparent steady numbers progression through the months of '82 is mere coincidence within this tiny data-starved sample. All other M7 models having far more entries show a clear pattern of numbers dropping back down in subsequent months, indicating serial number reset on a monthly basis. Even the small(ish) data sample for Walnut version 40-2039A shows this trend:

It is interesting to find such high serial numbers for first version 40-2039 through the November '82 run. I've only occasionally found them that high or exceeded on black die cast models. For context, 40,000 /month equates to a production rate of roughly 1300 per day, 7 days a week. Tandy may have pushed production of their new walnut mini-speaker to ensure world wide shelf stock leading into the lucrative holiday shopping season.
