Recent SME tonearm rewire?

Anyone send an SME arm to Canada recently.
Alfred sounds like a nice guy.
5 year old post but wanted to share with AK members: This business is run by a bonafide CROOK. I sent him an arm and when I refused to pay him over double the advertised online rewire fee he put up roadblocks, anti-US B.S. regarding Trump tariffs, ad naseum. He has my 3009 arm and won't return it. READ online at other forums to see what this dude really is all about. I found out the hard way, cost me an arm, no pun intended.

I had a phone conversation with him a while back, he's a character. Glad I didn't do business with him. How much money does he want?

I sent him a 3009 SII several years ago for a complete refurb & rewire. Cost went up for each little bit that "wasn't included". In the end the work was good - refinish on the arm was very nice, new pillar bearings were fine, but it just irked me enough that I won't do business with him again.

Talk to Steve at VAS in Cliffwood, NJ for a rewire. He did an excellent job with Nordost Valhalla wire on a Stax tonearm for me some years back. He also does excellent cartridge repair work.

Not to take Alfred's side, but I've tried dealing with a couple of Canadian companies over the last two years and, when given my USA 'ship to' address, they added the tariff onto the quoted price. Plus, international shipping is even more insane than USA shipping.

SME Tonearms Canada quotes online in 2026 when I sent him the arm $400 for rewire. He quoted me $875 with unclear costs on "tariffs and shipping". Appears he's on a one man crusade to punish U.S. citizens for Trump trade war against Canada IMHO.

To be clear, my experience was before the tariffs.
Its amazing to me that more people aren't documenting this thief up there. He catagorically stated in emails to me that he would call before working on the arm. When I got a call from him he claimed he'd already disassembled the arm. He then demanded me to pay 1 hr of time at $180 USD and $20 to return it in A POUCH!. I'm pretty convinced he's stolen my complete SME 3009 Ser. III arm with mount and wand/headshell. I sent him the ransom check, (wouldn't accept electronic payment or CC) a month ago. This is the very worst experience I've suffered in cross border commerce. I'm not ready to blame Canadians for their displeasure at the current tariff tax situation, but after all, we're all suffering from that. In any case, this is it for my rant...nothing to see here folks. I've been burned but hope this helps others from making the same mistake.
