reconing JBL 128h with 123a kit?

Hey all,
Was wondering if it is possible to use a 123a recone kit on an 128h basket. Is there a gap disparity or coil hight issue? Any suggestions would be great, thanks all.

Cannot find a good aftermarket kit. I was offered 2 kits for 1123's. Sorry they are 2213h kits.

Are you saying you have the 128 basket or a complete working 128?

I good reconer can just replace the correct weight spider and surround for you. I'm curious of exactly what you have as well.

I have 2 burned out coils. Typical of a 128h. I couldn't salvage them obviously. The gaps are gunky but no problem getting them cleaned out. The cones are mint. I think what I'll do is buy an AM kit and replace the black cones with my aquaplas white.

Also take into consideration the condition of the original spiders. To complicate things, you have 2 to deal with. The system has to work as a whole.
Not telling you how to spend your $, but if the original JBL Recone kit is available, that would be the way to go if original JBL performance is your goal.
Just my $.02

Burned coils may be the result of driving the 128 to hard of a defect in your amp.

This would be the best answer. My general policy is save and wait for the right part. Then pay the price for something I know will be enjoyed.

I can't be 100% opposed to attempting the suspension knowing that it's going to be hit or miss. It just depends on the scenario. The coil may end up being the hardest part. I recall Greg Timbers posting something to the effect of "they probably got everything right but the coil".

I've seen all of the aftermarket parts available individually. Something like this would definitely be a challenge. Let us know what happens, good or bad.

Personally, I'd suggest getting two working replacement JBL 128H's or H-1's, sell the bad ones as cores.

If you can get coils for your JBL s,Then all you have to do is find someone who can install them, keeping the rest of the speaker original.

Give Upland Loudspeaker Services a call (JBL auth. Service agent), Ken there may be able to help you. Also member GordonW may be able to work on these also and save using the original cones.

Worth a shot.

The coil is most likely to be consistent between ALL similar JBL 12" models than the other moving parts. JBL added mass to some cones with that white textured spray, some on the front of the cone body and some on the back, and they also added mass to some voice coils with an inserted ring of metal just under the dust cap. The photo on the left shows the ring inside the voice coil in a 122A. The photo in the middle shows the ring inside the voice coil in a 126A. The rings are obviously different. The photo on the right shows both voice coils are edge wound with the same winding length on Nomex formers.

Well thanks for all the input. I will try.to get the original kits at a whopping $450 but I think it would be worth it. I'll repozt to give everyone a heads up when I'm done fighting it all out and get them up and running. By the way they are for my L112's. Thanks all!

Try to find the reason(s) why the coils are fried before using the replacements so as not to be in this situation again.

Let me chime in on this one. The 128H and the 2213 are very different. The 128h is a linear cone with a foam surround construction and the 123A/2213 is curvilinear cone with a cloth accordion surround. Cone design and weights are very different: Here’s the basic specs:
128H
FS: 20hz
QTS: .24
VAS: 280.4 Ltrs.
LE: .6mh
RE: 5.7ohms
EFF: .86
2213H
FS: 25hz
QTS: .49
VAS: 235.0 Ltrs.
LE: .6mh
RE: 4.4 ohms
EFF: .68
As you can see the motor coil is the same in inductance, but resistance is higher in the 128H due to gap height differences. The C8R128H Kit is obsolete from JBL, but they should have some C8R2213’s still in stock, albeit very expensive at $220.00 a pop!

My recommendation is to get a recone kit for the 128H-1, the C8R128H-1 from JBL at about $250.00ea. Its much closer to the original 128H. That will give you the spider, surrounds, and Voice Coil assembly to get the 128H up and running if you do it right. JBL Pro Service will know the gap height of the voice coil. If the price is out of budget see Simply Speakers.com. They have a pretty good recone kit that will get you all of the parts for a great deal cheaper. Yes, they’re not original but you still have the cone so I think you’d be fine. Hope that helps you a little bit more.

So I spoke with Ken at upland he advised me not to go with a factory kit due to them being manufactured outside of the US, they are simply not up to speed. I'm going to order a kit from SS and recone them using my original cones. I will post pics of the finished product once I'm done. Once again thanks to all who gave their input.

That's what I've heard here and on LHS. Since the move to Mexico, quality rezones are NLA. This from reliable sources a few months ago. I would think that a company like JBL, or what it was would rectify the problem and pull the problem product off the shelves and replace it with product that was up to JBL standards. This is not encouraging to hear.
