Funny you should mention 78 singles. I was visiting a record shop here in Kingston NY. Got chatting with the owner. He has a Elvis Presley ":Heartbreak Hotel" single on 78!! did not know they existed Thats really cool!!

78s were gone from the US consumer market by 1961 at the very latest, but some were produced for jukeboxes into the 1990s!

I just picked up the 78 rpm mono (DOUBLE DISC) Beach boys 'Good Vibrations' single, which also has 'Heroes & Villians' as the 'B' side... the second disc has an alternate take of 'Heroes...' and an early take of 'vibrations'....

I havent listened to these two discs yet... my SL1300 has yet to be modded for 78... and my GE Musaphonic console, while being somewhat compassionate to discs, is still very much a "tough love" player....

As an aside... there is an insert paper in the sleeve that has the classic 'SMILE' beach boys title design on it and says "COMING SOON" under it... very interesting...

another note: these are numbered releases.. mine is #1609

And the final note for this disc set.. they have dead wax messages as follows;

Good Vibrations - Side A: "Jump in the Pig Pen"
Heroes and Villians - Side B: "Next Time I'll Take My Shoes Off"
Good Vibrations (Early Take) - Side C: "Hit The Dirt, Do Two and a Half"
Heroes and Villians (Alternate Take) - Side D: "Next Time I'll Leave My Hat Off"


No info on mastering found. But these labels have a note "ORIGINALLY RELEASED 1990 CAPITOL RECORDS, LLC"

I bought it and have listened to it on my Dual 1019 w/ Denon DL-160. The Beach Boys 78s sound very very nice!

The alternate takes have indeed been previously released on the 1990 2-fer CDs as well as other collections. I'm really looking forward to the forthcoming "Smile" set.

As for 78s in the old days, my understanding is the last 'regular' American 78 was issued in 1959. Many late '50s 78s, especially radio promo copies, were pressed on vinyl (not noisy shellac), and sound fantastic.

I've got an Ella Fitzgerald 78 that is, infact, a radio promo disc and that thing sounds remarkably stunning i must say... it's the quietest vintage 78 I own as a matter of fact.
