Rectilinear speakers - GW specials. Does anyone know anything about them?

Rectilinear III Lowboys. Same drivers as the Highboys. I had a pair - great speakers. Sound a little subdued at low volumes, but you can really wake them up with a good amp. I like to push them with at least 100 wpc.

Drivers appear to be original. Go get them.

Very nice find! A bit "thicker" sounding than the High-Boys, but one thing yoiu can do to rectify that is to lose those plastic fretwork grills if you have 'em. It makes a BIG difference without the grills...... With 'em on, the sound is very dull and muted. Take 'em off and let the sound out.

Seems like it's raining Rectilinears recently! Great speakers (I've never heard the lowboys but they have the same drivers as the highboys, and I have two pairs of those--they sound great!). There's a ton of info here about them. I'd suggest a recap is in order to help open up the highs a bit. The caps should be a 2 mfd and either a 60 mfd or a 100 mfd depending on which version of the crossover you have--if you do a search I've posted schematics for both crossover versions I've seen. Judging from the wide-diameter port, I would guess you have the later version, which is a series crossover with a 60 mfd cap for the midrange. I'm not sure if the crossovers are the same in the lowboys, but I imagine it's likely (the sales literature says they are exactly the same except for the shape of the cab--they even have the same interior volume). If you discover any info when you open them up, please post it here to increase our collective knowledge!

I just bought the highboys yesterday.

If you look at my thread from yesterday you'll find lots of info from the gurus here.

Several of these guys know tons about these speakers, which are reputed to be VHQ.

I'm not going to give you my opinion of the speakers, because they know so much more than I do, but a search here will reveal more info than you can absorb. I'll only say that the highboys wipe the floor with my modest little Advent Lecagies.

Thanks for the info. You're right, all of a sudden there's Rectilinears all over the place. The same guy also dumped off a Sony STR-6065, which I bought also. I'm going back today to see if anything else shows up - maybe a nice turntable will be with the bunch.

Wow--a classic sony receiver too!

I've driven the Rectilinears with Sony Str-6060f and Str-6075, and I found both to be a very nice pairing. I'm currently using a MAC-1700, which has a very similar sound to those nice early Sonys. A lot of people here really like high-powered amps for the Rectilinears, but I've found those nice early SS amps from Sony and McIntosh to be a great pairing, even if they have modest power ratings. The complaint usually seems to be that the Rectilinears need a little power to open up and remove their tendency to sound veiled, but I think a recap and tweeking the tweeter and midrange pots can do wonders (not to say that these don't sound wonderful when you put plenty of watts into them--they certainly love lots of power--more just to say that I wouldn't fret too much if you don't have tons of power).

Great find there...:yes: on both accounts. It seems to be almost raining excellent gear now that everyone has the Ipod/mp3 bug. I have seen more great used gear in that last coupla months than in a long time....:yes:

Your Advent Legacys shouldn't be ashamed........Rectilinear III's do that to a lot of speakers, and some of them aren't so modest.

Today I'm driving my highboys with a Sony STR-6200F and it does seem like a great match.

One suggestion is to put your lowboys on stands. It made a very positive difference in the quality to have the tweeters and midrange at ear level.
