Nice shootin' Tex! You're awesome. Your console will do them proud, with ease. Not to modern ear splitting levels, but loud enough to drown out a cocktail party! It's all about the midrange with that coupling, choose something fun to put through them. Louis Armstrong, with a cut including his horn should make you shed a tear.
Thank you, they're fun to listen to. How many? More than many, but less that quite a few. I counted 20 individual speakers in my living room and dining area yesterday, small handful of mono rigs. Right now my favorite is the vintage, homemade Stephens Trusonics and my Wharfedale Super 12 project. I'm working on two badass older Bozak projects. The B-4000 Symphony project will put them all to shame, I hope.

Doh! Bad luck I think. One speaker has the tweeter, mid and woofer working great. These things seem to really love voices, horns and other 'rich' mids.
The other speaker, tweeter and mid are Ok, but the woofer only works a bit when I put a finger on the cone anywhere and press ever so gently. And even then it's distrorted.
Bad voice coil? Is it repairable/reconeable or new woofer time?

Hmmm, yeah take a look at the tinsel wires. Play with it a bit, maybe spin it 180 degrees and try again. There's one on fleabay for 25 bux + 20 bux for shipping, not too shabby. It happens, I wouldn't be too sad about it. Of course it sucks, but it's not the end of the world. Keep going man!

Thanks Biggles, I'll give the spin a try. I saw that one on the bay, but it seems to be a bit different with a round back as opposed to square.
Anyone know if I can I mix and match or should I go for a pair or a single of the same type in the cabinets? Also will the different types be a match for the crossovers in this particular pair?

I don't know enough about that era of Wharfedale speakers to make an informed decision about what drivers will work or not. Gang Twanger would probably know, but I haven't seen him around in a few months.
If your woofer is different than the one online don't buy it. Whether you use a replacement, or pick up another pair of woofers, they should match. If I found a matching pair of W60 woofers and they weren't necessarily the same ones, I would install them. The crossover will work just fine on other W60 woofers. Will it sound the same as the previous pair? Maybe, maybe not. It's a decision you're going to have to make.
I would suggest being patient and not do something rash, too soon. Gather your thoughts, take your time. Set up a saved search on epay and have it tell you when something shows up.
I would also suggest paying the 25 dollar fee and becoming a Subscriber here. Not only do you help out AK directly, but it gives you access to Barter Town. This area has a PARTS section and you can put up an ad for a Wanted to Buy. Do this now, you really should.

Thanks again Biggles, I'm not too broken up as I got these and a minty reel to reel player for $100 altogether. Just found the Wharfedale owners thread in the British section and posted there as well for advice.
Will sign up for the subscriber option setup the epay search. The resources on this forum have been amazing and I am due to pay it forward for all the help I've gotten in such a short time.
Here's the speaker ready to be rotated. For those taking the woofer out of one of these, there's no need to take the screws out from the front, just the nuts and washers on the back (I used a 3/8th in 1/4 drive socket on an 18" extension). They're not steel so they don't jump and stick to the magnet. Boy those engineers are so smart! And that green felt is just cool. Too bad they don't sound as good as they look, lol!
Enjoying the 1 speaker in mono for now.. Just hear a rap song on the tube radio and it sounded pretty good, lol!
By the way, even with one woofer out, the stereo separation on these are really, really good for the mids/highs. Will have to learn where to finally set these between the tone controls on the pre-amp and the knobs on the back.

Tried the 180 flip and got nothin' yet, even with a bit of pressure.. Will let it play for a bit to see if it happens to wake up. The mid really puts out some nice mellow mid bass even. The working speaker really makes a snare drum sound 'real.' Can really hear the stick hitting the skin, the echo from the body and the sustained vibrations. The highs from the mids and treble seem to blend in as if it's all coming from one driver. Seem to be really well matched.
Will take it apart again and desolder the bad woofer put them 'on the bench*' to measure ohms tomorrow to check for short and confirm death. Going to put longer wires or spade connectors in anyway as these are sooo short and make taking the back panel off a pain as the back panel can only extend out about maybe 4 degrees, just enough room for one hand and a stubby screwdriver.
Changing the screws to Philips for the back panel, statistically speaking and scientifically proven, saves your sanity. Btw, they are #8 x 1.75in screws. Homedeepo has these in packs of 6, so you'll have to buy 3 and be left with 2 spares.
*(by bench, I mean my cluttered office desk with a towel on it that is used to simultaneously prevent scratches, serve as a cleaning agent, wipe my chin after lunch and store missing screws and washers out of sight when reassembling small parts. Also a bib sometimes)

Always refer to your desk with a towel on it as your Lab. It's all about image, smoke and mirrors baby.
Awwww, no love for the standard head screw? It's like using a rotary dial phone, just like it.
Have you played with the reel to reel tape deck yet? I've got a Sansui SD-5050, it's loads of fun. And oddly enough, it's a lot like using a rotary dial phone too. I forget what I'm doing halfway through the process.

Hmm.... "Lab", I like the way you think! Heretofore, the bathroom will now be referred as the cleanroom and the window as fume hood. Standard screws are now against lab policy and must be removed and deposited in the clean room before entering the lab. I've noticed that several local gas station 'clean room's' have a clipboard to track visitors. They must really run a tight ship.
Haven't yet played with the rtr as I don't yet have media but should have this in the coming days thanks to a generous member. Yet another reason to subscribe to AK.
The comparison to a rotary phone is pretty good, lol! Mine has an automatic take up reel, but I have no idea how to use this yet.
Thinking If I keep going this way, I'll be putting a kick start on my SUV and getting rid of that pesky keyless start. Who needs those kind of complex systems to go bad anyway and a kickstart should be easier to fix. In fact, I think I should replace the GPS with a magnetized sewing needle floating on a piece of paper in a bowl with water. (This would ACTUALLY be an upgrade to the crappy factory gps which has like 3 points of interest but an extensive listing of wrong addresses)

Very small touch, but one of my proudest moments in resto-mod!
I am way too pleased with these little knobs. About a buck each online, but they just add that last finishing touch to these speakers. In addition to the 'touch of class', they also make setting the pairs to match (at least as a starting point before finalizing by ear) so much easier. Since I'm having a bout of OCD in setting these just right, I can't tell you how much more pleasurable these are than turning a little metal post.
This small investment made my week.
Btw, they are from tube depot in the 'british knobs' section. (there's only a few there)
Just had to ream the inside a few turns with a screwdriver and they fit perfectly. (don't try to force them on)
I'd say it was .25 - .3 mm shave. The plastic comes out like wood shavings very neatly.
edit... ps, these are the push on type and it's parts and accessories / knobs.

There's a slippery slope! You may or may not be able to find a single or ratty pair of those as donors. Another avenue is to post a wanted to buy in Barter Town and see if anyone has one they can send you. This is how we all end up with a garage load of bits. All we needed was that one little thing!

You should take the backs off and take a look at the crossover capacitors, if you haven't already, to verify the capacitor values, as there seem to be a few versions.
If they are, indeed confirmed to be the, the 6 and 64 uf items.... Looks like these will work and you'll need 2 of each. (1 each type per speaker)
