Remote volume control for your Sansui

Register to hide this ad
Strictly from a functionality perspective, it should work.
Inserted between source and amp or in the processor loop of the amp itself.
Having it in circuit means keeping the amp volume at the "max" desired level (not necessary max volume pot position) and then volume will change between "0" and that volume setting/level.
But....there are some ifs and buts:
1 - there are no technical details and/or specs.....like max input/output voltages, THD, impedances, etc
2 - final sound will depend on the device itself, the PSU feeding the device and the cables looping it. How much to gain or lose....impossible to say :dunno:

Maybe a better alternative would be a good pre-amp having remote control for the volume and/or inputs.

If you want to stay brand exclusive you can do it the way I have done. Sansui rs-100
Looped the same way you would connect an equalizer. Preset the desired max volume on your amp, then use the remote for volume up or down.

Oh that is even better, and "on brand". Even found technical specs in the AK Database. Edit: I now have one on the way! Cool piece. Thanks for lead on that.

I doubt it is sonically transparent enough for demanding listeners (similar concept Sansui RS-100 is also not). The best solution is a passive preamp (just a pot, motorized for remote control, with a mute relay). Creek used to make such a device, called OBH-10. Sonically totally transparent. Hard to find these days (or. anything like it), which is a shame, very practical and usefull.

I wondered. RS-100 .15% THD through a .003% THD amp and maybe other signal influences, might be something there that is audible. I am a picky listener. I definitely want to try an RS-100 though - considering it's familial lineage. No data on the Newark product.

You resolved my concerns with using a preamp with that passive option. I'll keep and eye out for one of those. Nothing currently out there. Plenty of their head phone amps though.

I tried Creek OBH-21, not the same, active circuitry gives it a somewhat bright sonic signature, plus the noise if used in lower gain positions of its volume control.

@JimEGR Did you get the remote for your Sansui a-a7/a9?
They work really sweet.

Not yet! I need to track one down still. And I do really like the sound of those machines. Punching so far above their weight in the SQ department. Best bargain in Sui-Fi (for reasonable level near field listening). "Advanced" Diamond Differential FTW.

Right now I am imagining my soon to be system, from the listening chair -

INPUT - CD-a607
POWER - Yet to be revealed new-to-me JDM Alpha
L/R - Magnepan's
LOW - Rythmik servo subwoofer (fed by headphone jack thanks to that pro tip from @CrSens)

All remote controlled from the ease of a nice bean bag chair. And the house cat will be there too. This winter is going to be great!

Just found the technical sheet on the Newark product. The Sansui from the 80's beats it in THD! But better SNR with the Newark. Not sure how to compare the other specs. Just might need to run an A/B test to compare. The Newark wins in simplicity though.

Well, that 1.65V max input level can prove to be a problem with nowadays devices (like cdplayers and DAC's) which generally have 2V or even 2.5V output level. It really depends how the circuit is done - that will inevitably impose some limits. Given the size of Newark device, I bet on something like a dual op-amp inside, configured in non-inverting mode and acting as a buffer.

Good information. That passive Creek device suggested above sounds ideal.

There is a jungle of inexpensive passive devices from China, but most lack remote, and those with remote lack mute relay. I don't understand why no company is offering something like the simple and effective Creek.

I was actually thinking the max output line level of 2v might be a problem with older amps that have trouble with anything above150mv.

I use my DA-607i as pre amplifier. It has two line inputs and variable output.
I use another preamplifier for phono stage through tape out. And at the moment I am using it as DAC so even have a line input to spare.
With a Sansui alpha integrated amplifier connect it to power amp direct, volume on -0dB.

On all my vintage Sansui"s 2V is not a problem, except in losing the useful range of volume control, gets squished into the bellow 12 o'clock position. But again, none of them have op-amps at the input.

Here is some real life testing of the Multicomp (Newark) product

looks like it was being sold by Amazon at one time, some chatter about it being discontinued…
