Renaissance 90 Adventure!

Interesting, I always thought of the 90s as being pretty compact. Never seen a pair of 80s so don't know how they compare to the 90s, but I'll be interested in hearing what the head-to-head comparison is on them.

Not a comparison to the 80s and 90s but the 4Bs are surprisingly good for their size compared to the IIIBs. Say 90% of the sound for 60% of the money. As far as disappearing my Maggies are the biggest speaker I have ever seen disappear. I have tried several times though. Bring in a newcomer to hear them I have to play the maggies first. Can't tell where the sound is coming from. Put the IIIBs on and you know exactly where the music is coming from.

By the way, The Renaissance 80 speaker is by no means a small speaker. It is almost exactly the same size of the Kappa 7.1 speakers, and that is not necessarily small by today standars.

It is also hard to accept that a smaller, cheaper and simpler designed speaker of the same line can can actually sound better overall. I guess is a matter of pride and looking good, specially if the person owns the more expensive one. No offense to anyone, that is just life sometimes.:yes:

There was a thread a while back, from someone who switched from the 80 to the 90 and was not trilled. He tried many things without success and then he was not heard from again so the thread stalled.

I was really looking forward to hear peoples opinions on the subject.

Hmmm...two people that switched from 80s to 90s that have seemingly disappeared. Coincidence? I think the '90s are eating people.

Yep, owned them both at the same time so I was able to A/B for months. I regretably ended up selling the 80's...I was stuck on the bigger must be better. My one big audio regret for sure.

To me, the only thing the 80's gave up over the 90's was the sound stage height which...in retrospect could have been fixed by raising the speaker up a couple of inches on an isolation pad.

The silver lining in this story is after selling the 80's and living with the 90's, I knew I was missing out which led me to Revel...I'm a happy camper now :thmbsp:

It was a natural progression...and my hunch was correct. If you look closely in this picture you will notice Revel voicing their Ultima GEMS to some IRS Omega's...It's a stretch but you can see how Revels in many way's may be cousins of some of Infinity IRS speakers. My Revels definitely have an Infinity "house" sound.

Well, I've spent a few days with the 90's. Both the 80 and 90 are very capable speaker systems, with slightly different presentations. The 90's dig quite a bit deeper in the bass region. Another part of it is the addition of the midbass coupler; this allows the EMIM to be crossed over higher, so it doesn't have to play down as far. Both speakers have that mid/high magic that Infinity is known for.

I adore them both.

I was really hoping for more detailed comments on the 80 versus 90 issue.....

Man, I am SOOOOO envious, you get to spend time with both the 80s and 90s :drool: I keep an original Infinity Renaissance brochure in my collection just so I could look at them on occasion. I did buy the lower cost SM-122s, which were within my budget at the time, but the 80's and 90's were my aspirational choices. My brochure says they were available in 3 finishes (at least for that year)...blond oak, black oak, & limited edition black high gloss. Still among the most stunning speakers in existence.:thmbsp:
