Rescuing the KLH 6 Twins from the Evil Garbage Truck

Re: post #28, this is the first time I've seen Denny Roll show up in a KLH cabinet. He has left his mark in at least one pair of speakers of mine - - this image is from a 1964 AR-4 cabinet.

Interesting that we're finding this at both KLH and AR. Do you think he was a builder or inspector? I wonder if it is possible to find a bio for him? I did a google search and got a hit on him being associated with some AR-2's also. I wonder if he moved to AR with Henry Kloss? These must have been small companies back then.

Do we know when Henry Kloss moved to AR? we have some dates at KLH and at AR and I'm wondering if there is a corrspondence with Denny Roll presumably moving to AR.

Odd. In looking at the article mentioning Denny Roll for the AR-2's it shows the date as "Denny NOV 1962 Roll". I wonder what this is all about. Maybe this was an inspector for the materials supplier and not an employee of KLH or AR?
 
Kloss was part of the founding group at AR. He then left and started KLH in '57.

Cabinets were made by outside companies, at least in those days. Not surprising
AR and KLH might have used the same firm.
 
RxDx is correct about the Kloss timeline, and I think his theory about the cabinets may be correct, too. I had previously thought that Denny Roll was an assembler at AR who was simply having some fun and leaving his mark, but now having seen his stamp inside KLH cabinets, I suspect he was employed by the third party cabinet manufacturer who supplied both AR and KLH. During the period we are discussing ('62-63-64), AR's main vendor for cabinets was a NH company called Colonial, owned by the family of former US Senator Warren Rudman.

Bingo! Those blue LED's are a dead give away! Leesonic is the best! 3020 has nice symmetry with the KLH's.

I have to admit, I'd like to know more about Denny. Who was he? What happened to him? Will he now live on forever in internet (in)famy?
 
Damn. I only yesterday recapped a pair of AR 4X speakers, and I saw a little stamped insignia inside but neglected to look further into it. Maybe in 40 years when they need caps again, I'll check. Problem is, I'll be 107 then. Guess I'll have to buy the white album again, too.

Dang. Love all those KLH's. Beleive it or not I actually had a big Yamaha surround receiver, the RX-V2092 that will run 2 sets front, 1 set front effects, center, and rears. It will deliver down to 2 ohm. When I had a larger cave a couple of years ago I had 5's and 23's running on fronts, 17's for front effects, 6's on rear's, and a set of 22's on center. Yes the receiver got a tad warm but it was well worth it. The Eagles Farewell Tour DVD put me right smack dab in front of the stage! Great looking set up you got there!

I've got stories behind most of them too. Yesterday I stopped by the GW that is along my route home from work. As I was walking in I saw a TT sitting next to the cash register (the Kenwood KD-40R). It took me about 10 seconds of inspection before I grabbed it and got into line. One of the workers came up and was very concerned - explaining that there was something wrong with one of the RCA plugs on the end of the cable. It has been returned because it had that problem. (Geeze!) I thanked him and told him I could take the risk. (It was labeled as $3.99 and it was complete with AT cartridge, dust cover, hinges, and seemed to be visually in pretty good shape.)

Just love those thrift finds. For me, more than half of the fun is the hunt!

Other items I buy online or pay market value. For instance, I got the Marantz 2220B from a local independent electronics store about 6 weeks ago. The (very) old guy that runs it has been in business for about 50 years. He has a room full of vintage audio that is constantly turned over. I asked him for the price on the Marantz and he say 100 bucks. They do repairs there as well. I asked him if it works. He said it works great. I grabbed it. It does sound nice. Back in the 70's I never had a Marantz, but my high school buddy did. Can't remember which model, but I stay in touch with him. Maybe I'll ask him. I see them on ebay going for a whole lot more than the $100 that I paid. I get satisfaction in that....
