Revox B 795

but if your wife thinks the ReVox is hideous (or industrial !) you should...
...
I'm trying to figure out how I could possibly buy it but my wife has an axe over my head

I have around 10 turntables and 13 reel-to-reels and NO WIFE. I get to put my Revoxes wherever I want them. There's a B77 in the dining room table right now, and I can't think of any reason it shouldn't be there. It looks better than most dinner guests.

Guys,
Just snapped up a B790 from the German eBay for the sum of £220. including shipping.
From the photos, this unit looks near mint. So all I have to do is swap the arms around as mine was completely set and I don't fancy doing that again.
Also the German one has a cart fitted and I am hesitant to let a stylus unknown to me plough through my vinyl.

My motor is dead as Peter and Dale know, but I do have other parts if required.
Shoot me a PM if you're after something.

Dale, I am in the same boat as you, I could easily have 6 units sitting around just for the sake of having parts. Wife won't let me though.....
When I mentioned the 30 pairs of designer jeans I got a very evil look.....

Many thanks for sharing the data, SaSi ! I've just bought the motor PCB and hope to be able to bring back to life my B795 with it!!!! Can't wait until it gets over here...

The motor PCB arrived! I hope to have some time to get back to the Revox B795 next week. I'll keep you posted on how it evolves. I've got an Ortofon M 20 E to try on it. If things work fine, I'll look for a LOMC Ortofon MC20 MkII , following SaSi's good results.

Here is an update on my Revox B795 ( http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3336698&postcount=116 ): the Motor Control PCB is in badly damaged, with many contacts destroyed. At this point the easiest route is to find a replacement board. I will send an e-mail to Studer to see if they have a spare one for sale. Another possibility would be to find a donor machine, and I'll be looking around in auction sites for one. The rest seems to be in good shape. I've replaced the electrolytic caps as adviced.

News from my Revox B795 project: the replacement PCB arrived safely from the UK and it seems to work well. The Fradko caps in the power supply PCB have been replaced. The TT is alive, but there is a motor problem at start ( I guess this was the original problem that the guy who destroyed the motor PCB was trying to fix!): I don't know anything about DD TTs, but it seems that there are a number (8?) sectors in the circle of the platter that correspond to similar sectors in the motor. The platter starts or not according to which position it takes when the starting button is pushed. For the moment I have not been able to determine if this is a mechanical (motor) problem or still an electronics issue. Since the motor PCB looks like new, and the seller told me that the TT from which it comes was working well, I would take his word and assume that I should suspect from the motor itself. Any suggestions? Could it be dead phase ( http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3247462&postcount=44 )?

PS: SaSi, I keep in mind your request, please be patient until I could get things working here!

Breaking news: my Revox B795 is finally back in full performance! The merit is really of a EE who solved the problem of the non-working phase of the motor (he mentioned a Hall device) and built a counterweight to fit in a high compliance cart that I had, an Ortofon M 20 E. Tomorrow I am suppossed to go pick it up, and I can´t wait !

Good to hear that you are going to have it working properly at last, we all celebrate your success.
These Linatrack TTs are fairly rare and exotic fare in the U.S. and having given up on finding a worthy example after the last rather odd encounter, I've instead concentrated on the better-end line of Technics mini-LTs that had broader sales here. Interesting in their own right and normally very reliable, the variety of good 'P' mount carts is adequate given the lack of MC types no longer offered.

Congrats, guiller. Once you get it back and get the story on how the Hall device was fixed, please share it with us. My 795 with at least one non-functioning Hall device are awaiting repair by markthefixer with modern equivalents.

Thanks to all for your support! I picked it up yesterday and tried it briefly at night: all the commands work well. The sound is very good and the cart (Ortofon M 20 E) responds well to this TT. The TT performance is very good. There is only a AC line hum that I should trace back, but this is almost normal fare with TTs. From I what I've heard I can say that this TT is a keeper and was worth all the effort to bring it back to life. The speed stability is among the best I've ever experienced and the TT itself is low profile, with solid performance, as with other Revox pieces of gear I own. I'm happy!!

To SaSi: please PM me!

To Robie: what the EE told me is that he had to replace one of the Hall devices, and he knows where to find a replacement locally. If you are interested in one, I could ask him about and perhaps get it for you, if this is what you need.

Once again, thanks to all for the encouragement and the useful information shared in this great thread!.

PS: I'll post some pictures over the weekend

On markthefixer's advice, I ordered a couple of modern equivalents for less than $20, including postage. However, if OEM replacements are available I may be interested since that will make the repair that much easier.

guiller, if it's not too much truble, can you let us know how much the replacements are and whether 2 may be available? I'm not sure I will buy them but options are always good to have.

You need to be careful when picking non-original Hall sensor types. Most of the cheap modern ones are two-state output (high or low); for these motors you need linear bipolar types, which do exist, but are the most expensive types in the catalogues.
A two-state type might make the motor run, but you would not achieve good wow & flutter figures.

I'm looking now for a new and better cart for my B795. I've read some positive comments on the Audio Technica AT440MLa as a good match for these Revox models. I would be happy to mount a LOMC cart on it, but people say that this would be a bad choice given the low compliance of these carts and the low effective mass of the tonearm. SaSi mentioned a good match to an old Ortofon LOMC, but it is hard to trace back one for sale. I listen to classical music and I'm open to any suggestions.

I'll ask him next time I see him. He is supposed to have my Revox B77 serviced this week. I'll send you a PM if I get the information.

I'm using an Ortofon MC-3 HOMC in a modified lo-mass Souther SLA-3 and quite like it. It may work well in the Linatrack. Also their OM-20 and similar may do your listening pref well since you like quality well-recorded source material. Nice clean detailing with good dynamics.

Thanks for your suggestions. I was thinking about the 2M series, but read that these won't be mountable on the Revox tonearm. Is there any logic into this statement? Somehow I've always thought that there are only two types of cartridge mounting schemes, but perhaps I'm ignorant about something important here.

There are several mounts but the 1930's 1/2 inch is the most prevalent world-wide standard and the one apparently used on the Linatrack. If there is a problem with the cart being too tall from base-to-tip or too long-short or too heavy/light for the Lina's carrier platform plus accessory kit, then that would be a problem. Otherwise I thought they'd take pretty much any 1/2 inch cart or 'P' mount cart in adapter with the accessory kit in hand.

Steerpike, this is a "cut sheet" of the pair I ordered and gave to Mark along with my TT:

Ahh, that one came up in a forum post somewhere a few months back. My concern about it was that it has internal 'helper' circuitry, and possibly in-board voltage regulation. I thought it might object to the variable supply voltage it would get when used in the ReVox circuit. ReVox use the Hall sensor as a voltage multiplier, by giving it a supply voltage derived from the servo feedback voltage. If it works, and meets W&F specs, evidently my concern was unfounded.

Steerpike, thanks for your input! I'm hoping it works but if not, perhaps guiller's source can come up with a couple of the originals.
